According to Insider Gaming, new details have emerged about Assassin’s Creed Hexe, and they suggest a significant shift in both development and creative direction.

Major development changes behind the scenes

According to Tom Henderson and reports from Insider Gaming, the project has recently lost around 50 developers, raising concerns about internal restructuring and potential delays.

Originally rumoured for a June 2027 release, Hexe is now said to be at risk of slipping to a Holiday 2027 window.

On top of that, the game has reportedly undergone a change in leadership, with a new director stepping in and making noticeable adjustments to the overall vision.

A more grounded take on witchcraft

One of the biggest creative shifts is the removal of more “fantastical” elements.

  • The previously rumoured cat companion feature has been scrapped

  • The game is now leaning toward a more realistic interpretation of witchcraft

  • The protagonist will rely on chemistry and knowledge, rather than supernatural powers

This means abilities that look magical will actually have grounded explanations.

For example:

  • Creating smoke bombs to simulate disappearing

  • Using knowledge of chemicals and reactions to manipulate the environment

To ordinary NPCs, these actions may appear supernatural—but the game will frame them as science-driven techniques.

What this means for Assassin’s Creed fans

This direction could mark one of the most unique tones in the franchise since the earlier entries. Instead of leaning fully into mythology like Valhalla or Odyssey, Hexe seems to be going for a dark, atmospheric, almost horror-inspired realism.

That said, losing 50 developers is no small thing, and if accurate, it could impact:

  • Development speed

  • Scope of features

  • Overall polish at launch

Still early – but worth watching

It’s important to note that all of this information comes according to Insider Gaming, and plans can always change during development.

Still, if these reports hold true, Assassin’s Creed Hexe is shaping up to be:

  • Darker

  • More grounded

  • Potentially very different from recent AC titles

…and possibly one of Ubisoft’s most experimental entries in years.
