Remedy Files New Alan Wake’s Return Trademark 10 Years Later

Remedy Entertainment has filed a new trademark for Alan Wake’s Return, almost exactly a decade after the same name first sparked speculation about the future of the franchise.

The name may sound familiar. Remedy originally trademarked Alan Wake’s Return in 2016, prompting speculation about a potential new Alan Wake project.

At the time, Sam Lake clarified that it referred to the Alan Wake’s Return live-action video series featured within Quantum Break rather than a new standalone game.

Now the name has returned with a new trademark filing — and there are some notable differences.

Remedy Files a New Alan Wake’s Return Trademark

The original 2016 trademark expired earlier this month after Remedy had previously received a renewal notification in 2025. Rather than simply renewing it, Remedy filed a new application shortly after its expiration.

The new Alan Wake’s Return trademark also covers a somewhat different collection of goods and services.

The previous Class 028 covering toys has been replaced by Class 016 for printed materials and Class 025 for clothing. Class 041 continues to cover multimedia-related services, while Class 09 has been expanded with additional categories.

None of this confirms that Remedy is developing a new Alan Wake game under the Alan Wake’s Return name.

Could It Be Connected to Remedy’s Film and TV Plans?

The timing does leave several possibilities open. Remedy previously partnered with Annapurna to help bring the Alan Wake and Control franchises to film and television, making the continued multimedia coverage particularly noteworthy.

Alternatively, Remedy could simply be expanding its legal protection for the Alan Wake’s Return name across merchandise, media and other potential uses.

For now, there has been no official announcement connecting the trademark to a new game, movie or television project.

What is clear is that Remedy deliberately brought back a name that generated plenty of speculation a decade ago — this time under a new trademark with broader coverage.
