Brad Pitt is officially returning for a new World War Z sequel, with Paramount moving forward on another movie more than a decade after the original zombie blockbuster.

According to Deadline, a deal has been reached for Pitt to reprise his role, while Edward Berger is set to direct and Dennis Kelly will write the screenplay.

Plot details are currently being kept under wraps.

World War Z Sequel Finally Moving Forward

A sequel to 2013’s World War Z has been discussed for years, with Pitt repeatedly attached to potential versions of the project.

One previous attempt would have reunited Pitt with longtime collaborator David Fincher, but that version ultimately failed to move forward amid budget concerns.

The newly announced project represents another attempt by Paramount to continue the franchise, this time with Berger behind the camera.

It remains unclear whether the movie will officially be titled World War Z 2.

No Release Date Yet

The original World War Z was loosely based on Max Brooks’ bestselling novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, although the movie told its own story centered around Pitt’s Gerry Lane.

With details of Dennis Kelly’s screenplay being kept secret, there is currently no indication of where the sequel will take the story or how closely it could draw from Brooks’ original material.

Filming has not yet started, and Paramount has not announced a release date for the new World War Z movie.

For now, the biggest development is one fans have been waiting more than a decade to hear: Brad Pitt is returning to the zombie franchise.
