Attacks transition smoothly into one another, while cinematic finishers give battles an appropriately brutal conclusion.

One particularly impressive sequence demonstrates how environmental elements can seemingly interact with combat.

The player throws fire toward a group of enemies, setting them ablaze, before using the flames to ignite their blade. The newly empowered weapon can then unleash sweeping fire attacks during the following encounter.

It’s an interesting glimpse at how Black Myth: Zhong Kui could expand beyond the combat systems established by Wukong.

Bivši šef PlayStationa Shuhei Yoshida pita je li gubitak fizičkih diskova doista tako veliki problem

Environments Appear More Interactive

Combat isn’t the only area that seems to have evolved.

The environments shown throughout the footage feature considerably more interaction than you might expect from the series.

Trees can be set on fire, while traversal appears relatively unrestricted. Zhong Kui can climb across rocks, boulders, and other environmental obstacles without constantly being restricted to clearly defined pathways.

That could potentially make exploration feel more natural than it did in Black Myth: Wukong, although we’ll need to see much more of the game before knowing how extensive these traversal mechanics actually are.

The visual design remains unmistakably inspired by Chinese mythology, with Game Science once again combining realistic environments with increasingly bizarre supernatural creatures.

First Black Myth: Zhong Kui Boss Fight Revealed

The showcase eventually transitions into a full boss encounter against one of the strangest creatures revealed so far.

The towering enemy features enormous clam-like shells resembling wings, which initially act as protective armour.

Players gradually break those shells apart during the battle, fundamentally changing the encounter.

Once its armour is destroyed, the creature becomes significantly more aggressive, forcing the player to react to a much faster and more dangerous opponent.

Things become even more interesting when a mysterious ally enters the battle.

The protagonist eventually appears to possess or take control of the ally, introducing a substantially more powerful combat state.

This section particularly highlights the weight behind Zhong Kui’s defensive mechanics. Parries and blocks have a satisfying physical impact, while successful counters transition into powerful attacks against the boss.

It’s unclear exactly how this possession mechanic works or how frequently players will be able to use it, but it could become one of the defining gameplay systems separating Zhong Kui from Wukong.

The presentation concludes with a short montage featuring additional cinematics, environments, characters, and several fantastical creatures that players will encounter throughout the adventure.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui Still Has No Release Date

Despite finally receiving an extensive gameplay showcase, Black Myth: Zhong Kui doesn’t currently have a release date.

Its complete platform lineup hasn’t been confirmed either.

Game Science has so far announced the title for PC and “major consoles,” with more specific platform details expected closer to release.

Considering the footage is still taken from an early work-in-progress build, there may still be a substantial wait ahead.

Nevertheless, these first 15 minutes provide the clearest indication yet of what Game Science is building after Black Myth: Wukong—and the studio appears determined to make its second Black Myth adventure considerably more ambitious.

What did you think of the first Black Myth: Zhong Kui gameplay?
