Sega is expanding its franchises beyond gaming with three new Netflix adaptations, including projects based on Crazy Taxi, Sonic the Hedgehog and Stranger Than Heaven.

The projects will take very different forms, with Crazy Taxi becoming a comedy movie, Sonic receiving a new animated children’s series, and Stranger Than Heaven getting a live-action movie adaptation.

Crazy Taxi Is Getting a Comedy Movie

According to Variety, the Crazy Taxi movie will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writers behind The Naked Gun reboot.

The choice of a comedy format appears particularly fitting for Crazy Taxi, a franchise built around its chaotic arcade gameplay and over-the-top personality.

Meanwhile, Netflix is developing another animated Sonic the Hedgehog series aimed at younger audiences. Sega already has a successful Sonic movie franchise, but this project will be separate from those theatrical releases.

Stranger Than Heaven Is Also Heading to Netflix

The third project is a movie based on Stranger Than Heaven, although the creative team behind the adaptation hasn’t yet been revealed.

Netflix VP of nonfiction and transmedia Brandon Riegg explained why the company sees Sega’s franchises as strong candidates for adaptations:

“Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up.”

Sega head producer Toru Nakahara also teased the different direction planned for each project.

“Expect something cute yet cool for ‘Sonic,’ hilariously crazy for ‘Crazy Taxi,’ and a badass action drama for ‘Stranger Than Heaven,’ because we’ve got some amazing creative ideas lined up, and we are just getting started.”

Release dates for the three Sega Netflix adaptations have not yet been announced.
