Sony has officially confirmed that God of War: Laufey will launch on February 16, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The announcement was made during San Diego Comic-Con 2026, giving fans a concrete release date for the next chapter in the God of War universe.
Unlike previous entries, Kratos will not be the main playable character. Instead, players will step into the role of Laufey (Faye), the legendary warrior and wife of Kratos, whose story has long been teased throughout the Norse saga.
A New Hero Takes Center Stage
God of War: Laufey shifts the spotlight away from Kratos for the first time in the modern series, allowing players to experience the world through the eyes of one of its most mysterious characters.
Although Faye played a crucial role in the events of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, much of her past has remained unexplored. The new game aims to change that by telling her story in a standalone adventure.
Sony also released a new trailer confirming the launch date and offering another glimpse at the game’s world and combat.
A Project Nearly a Decade in the Making
The game’s development has been years in the making.
Earlier this year, journalist Jason Schreier reported that the title was targeting an early 2027 release, and Sony Santa Monica later confirmed the release window.
The game itself was officially unveiled during the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play, where players got their first look at gameplay and learned that Faye would serve as the lead protagonist.
Adding to the anticipation, actress Deborah Ann Woll, who portrays Laufey, revealed that the project was first discussed with her nearly a decade ago. She explained that she was approached about the role around 2018, the same year the rebooted God of War launched on PlayStation 4.

More God of War Is Already Planned
Sony also shared another exciting announcement during San Diego Comic-Con.
The studio confirmed that another God of War game starring Kratos is already planned and will continue the story after the events of God of War: Laufey.
According to Sony, the next Kratos-led adventure will be directly connected to Laufey’s story, suggesting that the upcoming game is an important chapter in the future of the franchise rather than a standalone spin-off.
