God of War: Laufey

Next Kratos-Led God of War Will Continue the Story After God of War: Laufey

Sony Santa Monica has confirmed that the next God of War game starring Kratos will directly continue the events of God of War: Laufey, establishing the upcoming title as an essential chapter in the franchise’s future.

The announcement was made during San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where Cory Barlog, creative director at Santa Monica Studio, revealed that the stories of Laufey and Kratos are closely connected and designed to flow into one another.

Kratos Returns After Laufey

While God of War: Laufey will put Kratos’ wife, Faye (Laufey), in the spotlight, fans won’t have to wait long before the Ghost of Sparta returns as the series’ main protagonist.

According to Barlog, the next Kratos-led installment is planned to release after God of War: Laufey, with both games forming parts of a larger narrative.

Rather than serving as a standalone spin-off, Laufey’s adventure will lay the groundwork for the next main chapter of the God of War saga.

Laufey Is the Beginning of a New Story

God of War: Laufey is scheduled to launch in early 2027 and marks the first modern God of War game to feature a protagonist other than Kratos.

The game was officially revealed during Sony’s State of Play presentation, where fans received their first gameplay footage. Although Laufey is the main playable character, the trailer also included a brief appearance by Kratos, teasing his continued importance to the overarching story.

With today’s announcement, Sony has made it clear that Laufey’s journey is not a side story but a major piece of the franchise’s future.

God of War TV Series Continues Production

Outside of gaming, the God of War universe is also expanding with an upcoming Amazon Prime Video television series.

Production recently faced an unexpected setback after actor Ryan Hurst, originally cast as Kratos, suffered a torn bicep during filming.

As a result, the production team made the difficult decision to recast the role so filming could continue without significant delays. The identity of the new actor has not yet been announced.

The television adaptation is expected to follow the story of God of War (2018), bringing Kratos’ Norse journey to live action for the first time.

A New Era for God of War

With God of War: Laufey arriving in early 2027 and another Kratos-led sequel already confirmed, Sony Santa Monica appears to be building a connected multi-game storyline rather than isolated adventures.

The approach gives longtime fans an opportunity to explore Faye’s untold history before returning to Kratos in what promises to be the next major chapter of the God of War franchise.
