The upcoming God of War television series has reportedly hit an unexpected setback, as actor Ryan Hurst will no longer portray Kratos following a serious injury sustained during production.
According to multiple reports, Hurst suffered a torn bicep while filming Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of the beloved PlayStation franchise. The injury reportedly required surgery and comes with a lengthy recovery period, forcing the production team to recast one of gaming’s most iconic characters.
Ryan Hurst Will No Longer Play Kratos
Ryan Hurst was officially announced as Kratos earlier this year and was widely praised by fans as a strong choice for the role thanks to his imposing presence and previous performances.
Unfortunately, the physical demands of portraying Kratos appear to have made continuing with production impossible after the injury.
Reports suggest Hurst may not have been able to return to filming until early 2027, a delay that would have significantly impacted the show’s production schedule. Rather than postponing filming, Amazon has reportedly decided to move forward by casting a new actor as the Ghost of Sparta.
Who Could Replace Kratos?
At the time of writing, Amazon has not announced who will replace Ryan Hurst.
With filming already underway, speculation has quickly spread across the gaming community as fans debate who could step into the legendary role.
The series is expected to adapt the story of God of War (2018), following an older Kratos and his son Atreus as they travel across the Norse realms to fulfill the final wish of Kratos’ late wife by scattering her ashes from the highest peak.
Several major characters from the 2018 game have already been cast, suggesting production remains well underway despite the unexpected setback.
Ryan Hurst Was Excited to Become Kratos
Following his casting announcement earlier this year, Hurst shared his excitement with fans on social media.
“Used to play as him. Now I get to be him. Grateful to pick up the axe, and honored by the fans who made this story legendary.”
The post was warmly received by the God of War community, making the news of his departure even more disappointing for fans who had been looking forward to seeing his interpretation of Kratos.
Season 2 Already Greenlit
Despite the production setback, Amazon remains highly confident in the adaptation.
In an unusual move, Prime Video renewed the God of War series for a second season before filming of the first season had even wrapped, demonstrating the company’s long-term commitment to one of PlayStation’s biggest franchises.
For now, all eyes are on Amazon as fans eagerly await the announcement of who will ultimately wield the Leviathan Axe when God of War arrives on Prime Video.
