The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is officially back, with a new Legacy Edition receiving a surprise shadow drop and becoming available to play immediately across all supported platforms.

The new release brings back the cult-favorite action RPG while expanding its connection to Tolkien’s wider legendarium. The story once again focuses on the war unfolding in Middle-earth’s northern regions while Frodo and Sam begin their journey toward Mount Doom.

Rather than following the Fellowship from the main story, players form another group tasked with stopping Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean and servant of Sauron who is building a powerful army among the ruins of Fornost.

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition was announced and released on the same day, allowing players to jump straight into the adventure.

The Legacy Edition revisits the original game’s story while placing additional emphasis on its connections to the larger events unfolding throughout Middle-earth.

While Frodo, Sam, and the Fellowship deal with the One Ring, another dangerous conflict is developing in the North.

Agandaûr is gathering forces for Sauron, leaving a second fellowship responsible for preventing his army from becoming another major threat to the Free Peoples of Middle-earth.

Three Playable Heroes Return

At the heart of War in the North are the three Orc-Banes, with players able to seamlessly switch between them.

Each character offers a completely different approach to combat.

Eradan is a Dúnedain Ranger specializing in stealth, archery, and precise sword attacks. Players who prefer speed and ranged combat will likely feel most comfortable using him.

Andriel is an Elven Loremaster who relies heavily on magic. She can support the group through healing while using powerful area-of-effect spells against groups of enemies.

Finally, Farin is a Dwarven Champion built around durability and heavy melee combat. He effectively serves as the group’s tank, capable of absorbing punishment while dealing devastating damage at close range.

Online and Split-Screen Co-Op Included

One of War in the North’s defining features remains its focus on cooperative play.

The Legacy Edition supports up to three players, allowing you to experience the campaign alongside two friends.

Players can team up through online multiplayer or split-screen co-op, making the game particularly appealing for anyone looking for a cooperative Lord of the Rings adventure.

The different strengths of Eradan, Andriel, and Farin also encourage players to work together, combining ranged attacks, magic, healing, and brute force during larger encounters.

Build and Customize Your Heroes

Each character can be developed throughout the adventure using different skills, abilities, weapons, and equipment.

Gear discovered while exploring Middle-earth can significantly influence how each hero performs in battle, allowing players to customize their preferred playstyle rather than being locked into a single build.

The party also has access to Belaram, the Great Eagle, who can be summoned to unleash devastating attacks from above.

Combined with the three-character party system, this gives combat a mixture of traditional action RPG mechanics and cooperative tactical elements.

Familiar Lord of the Rings Characters and Locations Return

Although War in the North tells a story largely separate from Frodo’s journey, players will encounter plenty of familiar faces.

Characters including Aragorn, Gandalf, and Elrond make appearances throughout the adventure, connecting the game’s events with the larger War of the Ring.

Several iconic locations from Tolkien’s world can also be explored.

Players will travel through areas including Rivendell, Lórien, Mirkwood, the Lonely Mountain, and the ruins of Fornost while attempting to stop Agandaûr’s growing forces.
