A brand-new Far Cry project has reportedly entered full development at Ubisoft, marking a fresh direction for the long-running open-world shooter franchise.
According to a new report, the unannounced title—currently codenamed Kodiak—has officially moved beyond its concept phase and is now actively being developed at Vantage Studios. The project is said to build upon ideas from a previously canceled Far Cry game while taking the series in a different direction.

Project Kodiak Is an Open-World FPS
Sources claim that Kodiak is being designed as an open-world first-person shooter with a stronger emphasis on player-driven experiences.
Rather than focusing on a traditional linear narrative, the game is reportedly built around:
- Dynamic player interactions.
- Emergent gameplay.
- Player-created stories.
- A large open world encouraging exploration and cooperation.
The project is described internally as “very ambitious,” although it’s still believed to be several years away from release.
Built From the Ashes of Maverick
Kodiak reportedly uses technology and concepts originally developed for Project Maverick, Ubisoft’s canceled Far Cry extraction shooter.
Maverick had been in development for several years before the company decided to cancel the project, effectively abandoning its plans to push the Far Cry franchise into the extraction shooter genre.
Instead of scrapping everything, Ubisoft is said to have repurposed much of that work into Kodiak, while shifting the gameplay back toward a more traditional open-world experience.
Blackbird Remains Ubisoft’s Main Far Cry Project
Kodiak isn’t the only Far Cry game currently in development.
The next mainline installment, codenamed Blackbird, is still moving forward despite reportedly facing several internal delays during production.
According to the report, development has stabilized, and the project is now progressing well.
Blackbird is also expected to feature:
- A full single-player campaign.
- Multiplayer functionality allowing multiple players to explore together.
- A foundation that could support future Far Cry titles.
Ubisoft Is Planning for the Future
An internal interview reportedly quoted Charlie Guillemot, who described Blackbird as “Act One,” suggesting Ubisoft views the project as the beginning of a broader long-term strategy for the franchise.
If Blackbird performs well, the company could expand the series through multiple interconnected Far Cry experiences built around similar technology and gameplay systems.

Expanding Ubisoft’s Biggest Franchises
With Kodiak joining development, Ubisoft continues investing heavily in its flagship franchises.
Alongside ongoing projects for Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six Siege, the new Far Cry title highlights the publisher’s strategy of creating multiple experiences within its largest gaming universes.
As always, because Ubisoft has yet to officially announce Project Kodiak, these details should be treated as unconfirmed reports until the company shares more information. However, if the claims prove accurate, Far Cry fans can look forward to an ambitious new chapter that moves away from the canceled extraction shooter concept while embracing the open-world gameplay that made the series so popular.
