Ubisoft recently held a Reddit AMA for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, with Creative Director Paul Fu and Game Director Richard Knight answering fan questions about the upcoming remake.
The AMA revealed several important details about combat, parkour, naval gameplay, world design, side activities, HUD customization, outfits, social stealth, and more.

Classic Black Flag Wanted System Returns
Ubisoft confirmed that Black Flag Resynced will use the classic Wanted System from the original game.
Pirate Hunters will appear depending on Edward’s wanted level, stalking the player across the sea. The higher your wanted level, the stronger and more frequent these hunters become.
Players will be able to reduce their bounty by boarding ships or by paying bribes to corrupt officers.
Interestingly, the DNA Sequences menu will not return in the remake.
Map Size Remains the Same, But the World Is Denser
One of the biggest confirmations is that the map size remains identical to the original Black Flag, measuring 16 x 16 km.
However, Ubisoft explained that the world has been made denser, with new islands and additional locations added inside cities. So while the overall scale remains faithful to the original, exploration should feel fresher and more rewarding.
Social Stealth Is Back
For fans worried about the stealth identity of the remake, Ubisoft gave a very direct answer: social stealth is returning.
The team did not go into deep detail during the AMA, but this confirms that Black Flag Resynced is not moving entirely toward modern action stealth. The developers also acknowledged requests for more classic-style controls and said they are actively watching feedback around that topic.

Combat Is Inspired by Original Black Flag Combo Videos
Ubisoft explained that the new combat system is heavily inspired by fan-made combo and tool videos from the original game.
The goal is to bring back Edward’s flashy, parry-based combat style while making it feel deeper by modern standards. In the original game, tools like pistols and gadgets were often more visual than strategic. In Resynced, different moves will be useful in different situations, requiring players to react quickly if they want to chain stylish attacks together.
More combat details are expected in a dedicated deep dive.

HUD and Visual Effects Can Be Customized
The developers confirmed that players will be able to customize the UI and HUD, including options to disable certain visual effects.
Ubisoft specifically addressed feedback about parry VFX being too visually loud. The team said it is actively exploring that issue, though it still recommends keeping visual cues enabled while learning enemy attack timing.
This should be good news for players who want a cleaner, more immersive experience closer to the original game.

Built on Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Anvil Technology
Ubisoft confirmed that Black Flag Resynced uses the same core Anvil engine technology seen in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
This gives the remake access to ray tracing, RTGI, improved sound, dynamic weather, destructible objects, and other modern rendering features. Richard also highlighted the importance of the Anvil water technology team, saying they were critical in delivering what Ubisoft hopes will be the best naval experience yet.
Legendary Ships Return
The brutal Legendary Ship battles from the original Black Flag are officially returning.
Ubisoft confirmed they will be back and “as brutal as ever,” with more details planned for a naval gameplay deep dive later in May.
Kenway’s Fleet Is Built Into the Game
Kenway’s Fleet is also returning, but this time it will be fully integrated into Black Flag Resynced.
Players will be able to access it through the Hideout or Edward’s Captain’s Cabin, with no external phone app required.
All Original Side Activities Return
Ubisoft confirmed that all side activities from the original game are available in Resynced and have been rebuilt from the ground up.
That includes activities such as hunting, diving, board games, naval activities, and other side content from the original release.
Bar games are also returning as they were in the original.
Royal Convoys Return, Social Chests Remain Mysterious
Royal Convoys are confirmed to be in the game, though Ubisoft teased that finding them will not be easy.
As for social chests, the team avoided a direct confirmation, joking that “a pirate never confirms or denies the existence of his treasure.”
Original Costumes Return
Ubisoft confirmed that all original costumes from Black Flag will return in Resynced.
This should include classic Edward outfits that fans remember from the 2013 release, although the team did not fully detail every outfit or potential new additions during the AMA.

Old Shanties Return, With New Ones Added
The iconic sea shanties are also returning, and Ubisoft confirmed that there will be some new shanties as well.
Paul teased that some of the new shanties are inspired by familiar characters, suggesting a more emotional touch for longtime fans.
Naval Autopilot Added
A new Pathfinder system has been added for naval travel, meaning the Jackdaw now supports autopilot.
However, Edward’s hands must stay at the wheel, with Ubisoft joking that players never know when an attack might happen.
Events Are Built Into the Game
Ubisoft confirmed that events are now built directly into the game rather than relying on the same old online-style structure.
There will also be online content in the form of Anomalies, similar to what players have seen in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Memory Corridors Return in 4K
Post-assassination memory corridors are officially back.
Richard confirmed this with a simple tease: the memory corridor returns, this time in 4K.
Controls Are Remappable
Ubisoft confirmed that controls are fully remappable, with separate remapping options for ground and naval controls.
This should help players who want specific layouts for combat, exploration, or ship gameplay. More accessibility details are expected soon.
New Content Featuring Old and New Characters
When asked about historical figures like Anne Bonny and Mary Read, Ubisoft confirmed that the team noticed newly discovered historical research around Bonny’s burial records.
The developers also teased new content featuring both returning and new characters, though they did not fully explain how large those additions will be.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the AMA makes Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced sound like a remake that is trying to carefully balance nostalgia with modern improvements.
The map remains the same size, the Wanted System returns, social stealth is back, Legendary Ships are confirmed, all original side activities return, and Ubisoft is clearly listening to fan concerns around HUD, controls, and visual effects.
At the same time, the remake is adding denser locations, new islands, modern Anvil technology, improved naval systems, new shanties, and expanded content around familiar characters.
For longtime Black Flag fans, this AMA delivered a lot of promising answers.
