Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced that it will stop producing physical discs for all new Sony PlayStation games beginning in January 2028, marking one of the biggest shifts in PlayStation history.
The transition to a digital-only format emphasizes the growing importance of digital distribution for the Sony PlayStation ecosystem. From that point forward, newly released PlayStation titles will only be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers that sell digital game codes.
The announcement has already sparked widespread debate among fans, many of whom see it as the beginning of a fully digital future for PlayStation.
No More Physical Discs After January 2028
In a statement published on the official PlayStation Blog, Sony confirmed:
“Physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.”
The company clarified that the decision only affects new releases launching from January 2028 onward.
Games released before that date—including their physical editions—will remain unaffected.
Existing Physical Games Will Continue to Work
Sony emphasized that current physical libraries are not disappearing.
Players will still be able to:
- Play existing PS4 and PS5 disc games
- Purchase physical games released before January 2028
- Use their existing game collections
Only future PlayStation releases will move to digital-only distribution.
Why Sony Is Ending Disc Production
According to Sony, the decision reflects changing consumer habits.
The company says digital purchases now significantly outweigh physical game sales, making continued disc production increasingly difficult to justify.
Sony explained that moving away from physical media will allow it to focus resources on modern distribution methods while still giving players the choice of purchasing games through either the PlayStation Store or digital retailers.

Could This Reveal the PS6 Release Window?
The announcement has also fueled fresh speculation surrounding the PlayStation 6.
Industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis believes Sony’s timeline may offer an important clue.
According to Harding-Rolls:
“This pretty much guarantees that the PS6 won’t arrive until 2028 at the earliest.”
If accurate, the next-generation console could launch alongside Sony’s transition to an entirely digital ecosystem.
While previous rumors suggested the PS6 might include a detachable disc drive similar to the revised PS5, Sony has not revealed any official details regarding the next-generation hardware.
Community Backlash Begins
The announcement has generated strong reactions across social media.
Many players expressed concerns over:
- Loss of game ownership
- Digital preservation
- The second-hand game market
- Game lending and trading
- Rising dependence on digital storefronts
Others argue the move is inevitable as digital sales continue to dominate the industry.
Regardless of opinion, Sony’s announcement represents one of the biggest changes to PlayStation’s business model since physical discs first debuted with the original PlayStation nearly 30 years ago.
The End of an Era
Between the closure of the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita and the end of physical game production beginning in 2028, Sony is clearly accelerating its transition toward a fully digital future.
Whether players embrace that future remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: January 2028 will mark the end of physical media for new first-party and third-party PlayStation releases.
