PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita Officially Closing – Sony Confirms Shutdown Timeline

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced that the PlayStation Store will be shut down for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, bringing an end to nearly two decades of digital storefront support for the legacy platforms.

While players will still be able to download previously purchased games and content for the foreseeable future, new purchases will eventually no longer be possible.

PlayStation Store Closure Schedule

Sony confirmed the shutdown will happen in stages across different regions.

2026 Closures

The first wave begins this year:

  • Mexico
  • Honduras
  • Nicaragua

The PlayStation Store on PS3 will close in these territories starting August 2026.

Additional countries across Latin America and the Middle East will follow later in 2026.

Global Shutdown in 2027

For all remaining regions, Sony confirmed:

  • PlayStation Store on PS3 closes in July 2027
  • PlayStation Store on PS Vita also closes in July 2027

Once the stores shut down, players will no longer be able to purchase:

  • Digital games
  • DLC
  • Themes
  • Avatars
  • Other PlayStation Store content

Previously Purchased Games Will Remain Available

Sony says users won’t lose access to games they already own.

Players will continue to be able to:

  • Download previously purchased games
  • Re-download DLC
  • Access existing digital purchases

The company notes that these downloads will remain available “for the foreseeable future,” although no final end date has been announced.

Why Sony Is Closing the Store

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment, the closure is necessary because the PlayStation Store has evolved to support modern commerce infrastructure that older hardware can no longer fully accommodate.

The company explained that newer payment processing standards and backend systems are no longer compatible with the aging PS3 and PS Vita architecture.

As Sony continues focusing development on modern PlayStation platforms, resources will increasingly be directed toward current-generation hardware.

End of an Era

The announcement marks another significant milestone in PlayStation history.

Originally launched in:

  • PlayStation 3 – 2006
  • PlayStation Vita – 2011

Both systems helped define an important era for Sony, introducing countless digital-only releases, indie classics, and downloadable expansions.

Sony acknowledged that many players still have a strong attachment to both platforms, calling the decision a difficult one.

Physical Games Continue to Work

It’s worth noting that this announcement only affects the digital PlayStation Store.

Players will still be able to:

  • Play physical disc games on PS3
  • Access previously downloaded digital titles
  • Continue using the consoles offline

Only new digital purchases will be discontinued once the storefront officially closes.
