Rockstar Games believes its next projects could have shorter development cycles thanks to the technology, tools and production foundations established during Grand Theft Auto 6.
After more than a decade between Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA 6, Rockstar Games is optimistic that future releases could arrive considerably faster.
In a recent Bloomberg interview, Rockstar studio leaders discussed the challenges behind GTA 6’s development and explained how the work completed on the project could benefit future games.

GTA 6 Development Has Built a Foundation for Future Games
Rockstar developer Phil Hooker explained that the studio has invested heavily in its technology, development tools and team throughout GTA 6’s production.
“The engine, the tools and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly,” Hooker said.
He added that Rockstar could build upon these foundations rather than repeatedly expanding its technology from scratch.
Studio head Aaron Garbut echoed that confidence, explaining that GTA 6 required major foundational changes that the team does not intend to repeat for its next project.
Rockstar Reflects on GTA 6 Development Challenges
The developers also acknowledged that GTA 6 experienced difficult development periods, including uncertainty surrounding its creative direction.
The COVID-19 pandemic and major leaks added further complications to an already ambitious production.
However, Rockstar believes overcoming those challenges has positioned the studio to work more efficiently moving forward.
The approach could resemble earlier Rockstar releases, such as GTA 3 and Vice City, which launched just one year apart after sharing significant technological foundations.
While Rockstar has not announced its next game or confirmed a development timeline, the comments suggest that future projects may not require another decade-long wait.
Grand Theft Auto 6 launches November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
