Sony May Have Acquired the Kena IP From Ember Lab, New PlayStation Trailer Suggests

Sony Interactive Entertainment may have acquired ownership of the Kena franchise from Ember Lab, according to a copyright notice discovered in a new PlayStation promotional trailer.

A newly released PlayStation advertisement featuring Thai performer and PlayStation ambassador Lisa has sparked speculation about the future ownership of the Kena franchise.

The promotional video showcases several PlayStation titles, including Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, God of War Laufey and the upcoming Kena: Scars of Kosmora.

However, viewers noticed an unusual copyright notice accompanying footage of the new Kena game.

PlayStation Trailer Lists Sony as Kena Trademark Owner

As highlighted by Push Square, the promotional trailer includes the following statement:

“©Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC. Kena Scars of Kosmora is a trademark of Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC.”

This is significant because Ember Lab has previously been identified as the rights holder for the franchise, including the original Kena: Bridge of Spirits.

The updated trademark attribution suggests Sony may have negotiated an ownership agreement with the developer.

However, the notice specifically references Kena: Scars of Kosmora and does not independently confirm that Sony owns the entire franchise.

Neither Sony nor Ember Lab has officially announced an IP acquisition.

Did Sony Also Acquire Ember Lab?

The discovery has also prompted speculation that Sony could have acquired Ember Lab itself.

However, there is currently no evidence confirming a studio acquisition.

Ownership of a game’s intellectual property does not necessarily mean its developer has been purchased.

Sony has previously pursued ownership of franchises associated with its publishing partnerships, making a potential Kena IP agreement plausible.

For now, the exact nature of Sony’s relationship with Ember Lab remains unclear.

Kena: Scars of Kosmora Is Coming in 2027

Kena: Scars of Kosmora is scheduled for release in 2027, continuing the adventure introduced in Kena: Bridge of Spirits.

The sequel is being developed by Ember Lab, although the new copyright notice raises questions about who will ultimately control the franchise.

Until an official announcement is made, Sony’s potential acquisition of the Kena IP should be treated as speculation rather than confirmed news.

The copyright notice can be seen in the official PlayStation promotional trailer.
