Beyond Good & Evil 2 Reportedly Still in Pre-Production With 250 Developers After 18 Years

Ubisoft’s Beyond Good & Evil 2 is reportedly still in pre-production nearly 18 years after its original announcement, despite having approximately 250 developers assigned to the project.

New details have emerged about the troubled development of Beyond Good & Evil 2, suggesting that Ubisoft’s long-awaited sequel remains far from completion.

According to French journalist Gautoz, whose claims were shared on ResetEra, the project continues to operate in pre-production despite being announced in 2008.

The report claims that approximately 250 developers are currently working on Beyond Good & Evil 2, primarily at Ubisoft Montpellier.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Has Reportedly Missed Multiple Development Milestones

The report suggests that Beyond Good & Evil 2 has repeatedly failed to meet internal development targets.

Management decisions and changing project requirements have allegedly contributed to the prolonged development cycle.

Despite the difficulties, Ubisoft reportedly continues investing in the project, partly because of its proprietary Voyager engine.

The technology was originally designed to support multiplayer experiences, but the game’s scope has reportedly changed significantly over time.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Is Now Reportedly Focused on Single-Player

According to Gautoz, Beyond Good & Evil 2 has shifted away from its original multiplayer ambitions.

The game is now reportedly being developed as a single-player-first experience, with its gameplay direction also undergoing major changes.

The report describes a transition from an early concept resembling Zelda in space toward gameplay more comparable to Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man series.

These changes suggest that Ubisoft is continuing to redefine the project’s identity rather than following its original vision.

Ubisoft Continues Development Despite Restructuring

Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first teased during Ubisoft’s Ubidays event in 2008, making it one of the longest-running development projects in gaming.

Although Ubisoft has undergone layoffs and restructuring, recent recruitment activity suggests that work on the sequel continues.

However, Ubisoft has not officially confirmed the reported team size, current development stage or gameplay changes.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 still has no confirmed release date or launch platforms.

Until Ubisoft provides a substantial development update, the project’s future remains uncertain.
