PlayStation 6 could face significantly higher production costs, with a new rumor claiming that its RAM and storage components alone now exceed $680 per console.
Sony has yet to officially announce the PlayStation 6, but a new report suggests that rising memory prices could create major challenges for the next-generation console.
According to hardware insider KeplerL2, the combined cost of the PS6’s RAM and storage has reportedly climbed above $680, significantly higher than Sony’s original component cost estimates.
The claim was highlighted by Video Games Chronicle.
PS6 Memory Costs Could Impact Console Pricing
KeplerL2 claims that Sony initially selected the PS6’s memory components when their projected costs were considerably lower.
However, increasing RAM and storage prices have allegedly pushed those costs beyond $680.
If accurate, this figure would cover only the console’s memory and storage, excluding other major expenses such as:
- Processor and graphics hardware
- Cooling and power components
- Manufacturing and assembly
- Distribution and retail costs
This could place additional pressure on Sony when determining the PS6’s final retail price.
However, component costs do not directly determine retail pricing, and Sony could negotiate different supply agreements or absorb some expenses.
Sony Has Not Announced PS6 Pricing or Specifications
The latest claim follows previous rumors concerning the PS6’s performance, release window and potential pricing.
Nevertheless, Sony has not officially revealed the PlayStation 6, and neither the reported $680 memory cost nor any suggested retail price has been independently confirmed.
Memory prices could also change before the console enters mass production.
For now, the report raises questions about next-generation console affordability, but it remains too early to determine how much the PS6 will actually cost.
