Former Naughty Dog director Bruce Straley has apologized for bringing God of War Laufey into his criticism of modern AAA development, saying mentioning the game was a mistake and that his wider argument was aimed at the industry’s leadership and business strategies.
Straley recently described the experiences being delivered across AAA gaming as “boring,” arguing that developers have fewer opportunities to introduce genuinely fresh ideas.
During that discussion, he mentioned Bog rata Laufey as an example, comments that quickly spread online.
He has now clarified his position in a post on X.

Straley Says Mentioning Laufey Was a Mistake
Straley said his comments were being stripped of their wider context, explaining that his criticism was primarily directed toward industry decision-making rather than the developers working on individual games.
He specifically criticized the industry’s pursuit of the next major games-as-a-service success.
“The quest for GaaS & wanting to recreate the next Overwatch, Fortnite, Roblox, etc is not a viable strategy & frankly shows these ‘industry leaders’ don’t know their own brand.”
Straley then acknowledged that bringing God of War Laufey into the conversation distracted from the argument he was trying to make.
“But in trying to have a thoughtful conversation, I stuck my foot in my mouth & mentioned Laufey, and that was my mistake.”
His clarification shifts the focus back toward what he sees as a broader structural problem within AAA development: platforms and publishers pursuing established commercial trends while making it increasingly difficult for development teams to take creative risks.
The comments follow Straley’s earlier Edge interview, where he said it feels like there is “no opportunity to inject fresh, innovative ideas” across much of the AAA space.
