Metroid Ravenous Announced as the Next 2D Metroid Game

Nintendo has officially revealed Metroid Ravenous, the next 2D entry in the long-running Metroid series, launching exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027.

The game made its official debut during the September 9 Nintendo Direct, confirming earlier reports that a new Metroid project carrying the Ravenous title was in development.

Metroid Ravenous Brings Samus Back to 2D

Nintendo‘s first trailer confirms that Metroid Ravenous returns to the series’ traditional side-scrolling gameplay, with Samus Aran once again taking center stage.

The announcement follows the franchise’s recent focus on the first-person Metroid Prime series and marks the next major 2D installment following Metroid Dread.

Metroid Ravenous had previously surfaced online in July, when references to the game appeared ahead of Nintendo’s official announcement. Those reports can now be put to rest, with both the title and release date confirmed.

Nintendo hasn’t yet provided extensive details about the story or new gameplay systems, but the reveal trailer offers the first look at Samus’ next side-scrolling adventure.
