PS6 Could Be Mark Cerny’s Final PlayStation Console

The PlayStation 6 could be the final Sony console designed with Mark Cerny as its lead architect, with the longtime PlayStation veteran revealing that he is nearing the end of his career.

Cerny has played a major role in PlayStation hardware for several generations and served as the system architect behind the PS Vita, PS4 and PS5. While he hasn’t announced his retirement, his latest comments suggest his time in the industry could be approaching its final chapter.

Mark Cerny Says He Is Nearing the End of His Career

Speaking to Datoteka igre about the newly established Nova Games Foundation, Cerny described himself as “nearing the end” of his career.

However, the 62-year-old developer and hardware architect also stressed that he is “not done yet.”

That distinction is important. Cerny hasn’t confirmed that the PS6 will be his final PlayStation project, nor has Sony announced who will lead the architecture of its next console. With PS6 development expected to represent Sony’s next major hardware generation, though, it could potentially become Cerny’s final console before retirement.

Beyond PlayStation hardware, Cerny’s decades-long career has included work connected to major franchises such as Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Resistance, Uncharted i Ratchet & Clank.

Cerny Is Already Investing in Gaming’s Next Generation

His comments arrive alongside the announcement of the Nova Games Foundation, a philanthropic initiative established with The Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley.

The program plans to support 20 young developers at selected US universities with initial $100,000 grants and industry mentorship, with promising projects potentially receiving as much as $500,000 in additional funding.

Developers will retain ownership of their games, while the foundation will also help connect them with publishers and promote their projects.

For now, Cerny remains active in the industry. But if the PS6 does become his final console as PlayStation’s architect, it would close a remarkable chapter spanning several generations of Sony hardware.
