Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office.
After 47 days in theaters, Tom Holland’s fourth solo Spider-Man movie has reached $936.773 million in North America, overtaking the $936 million record held by The Force Awakens for more than a decade.
Spider-Man Breaks a Record That Stood Since 2015
Star Wars: The Force Awakens had remained the biggest domestic release since 2015, but Brand New Day’s remarkable theatrical run has finally pushed it into second place.
The next milestone would be unprecedented: $1 billion from the domestic box office alone. However, reaching that figure during the movie’s current theatrical run may prove difficult without a future re-release.
Worldwide, Brand New Day has now earned approximately $2.45 billion, making it the third-highest-grossing movie globally behind Avatar at $2.9 billion and Avengers: Endgame at $2.7 billion.
Brand New Day Has Been Breaking Records Since Launch
The movie opened with $360 million domestically and $932 million worldwide during its opening weekend before crossing $1 billion globally after only six days.
It then reached $2 billion after three weekends, becoming the second-fastest movie ever to reach the milestone behind Avengers: Endgame.
Brand New Day also became the fastest movie to cross $700 million, $800 million and $900 million domestically, with only two movies in history having earned more than $900 million at the North American box office.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues Peter Parker’s story following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and has now delivered Marvel and Sony one of the biggest theatrical releases in movie history.
