4A Games and Plaion have unveiled a brand-new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039, offering the most detailed look yet at the next chapter in the long-running post-apocalyptic franchise.
Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, the trailer showcased brutal combat, haunting environments, and a surprisingly large amount of exploration taking place above the ruins of Moscow.
More importantly, players finally learned when they can return to the Metro.
Metro 2039 is scheduled to launch in February 2027.
A Dark New Chapter for the Series
Metro has never been known for optimism, but Metro 2039 looks set to become the darkest entry in the franchise so far.
This time, players step into the role of a mysterious new protagonist who is drawn back toward the devastated remains of Moscow to confront a familiar face from the series’ past.
The game’s primary antagonist is Hunter, one of the most important figures from the original Metro storyline and the man who originally set Artyom on his journey years ago.
Now, Hunter has transformed into something entirely different.
Hunter Has Become the Leader of a New Regime
According to 4A Games, Hunter has emerged as the leader of the Novoreich, a fascist movement that has risen from the ashes of post-apocalyptic Russia.
The gameplay trailer paints a bleak picture of a world shaped by his influence, with militarized settlements, oppressive forces, and survivors struggling to endure under his rule.
For longtime Metro fans, seeing Hunter return as the main antagonist is one of the most surprising developments the series has introduced.

More Above-Ground Exploration Than Ever Before
One of the biggest takeaways from the new trailer is the amount of gameplay taking place outside the Metro tunnels.
While the underground rail systems remain a major part of the experience, Metro 2039 appears to significantly expand exploration across the ruined surface of Moscow and its surrounding regions.
Players can expect a mixture of dense underground environments, abandoned cities, frozen wastelands, and dangerous open-world areas filled with both human and mutated threats.
The result looks far more ambitious than previous entries.
Built Around Survival, Stealth, and Storytelling
4A Games has confirmed that Metro 2039 will continue to focus on the elements that made the franchise so popular.
Stealth remains a core gameplay mechanic, alongside resource management, survival systems, and intense firefights using both classic Metro weaponry and an expanded arsenal of new tools.
The studio also promises a narrative heavily focused on the themes that have always defined the series, including authoritarianism, survival, hope, and the consequences of human conflict.
Given recent real-world events, those themes may feel more relevant than ever.
A Project Shaped by Real-World Events
Metro 2039’s development has had an unusual journey.
Earlier reports revealed that a previous version of the project was scrapped in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As a Ukrainian studio, 4A Games chose to rethink the direction of the game, creating a story that reflected a darker and more personal vision of the world.
That decision appears to have significantly influenced the final narrative players will experience in Metro 2039.
One of 2027’s Most Anticipated Shooters
Between its darker storyline, the return of Hunter, expanded exploration, and the franchise’s trademark atmosphere, Metro 2039 is quickly shaping up to be one of the most anticipated shooters of 2027.
The new gameplay trailer only reinforced that excitement.
And if Metro fans have learned anything over the years, it’s that the darkness beneath Moscow always hides something even worse waiting around the next corner.
