Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Was Rebuilt From Scratch, Developer Confirms

Despite looking incredibly faithful to the 2013 classic, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced wasn’t built using the original game’s code. According to game director Richard Knight, Ubisoft had to rebuild the remake from the ground up because the technology behind the original title is no longer compatible with modern development tools.

While the original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag served as an important reference throughout development, the remake is, in Knight’s words, “quite frankly, a brand new game.”

Original Black Flag Code Couldn’t Be Reused

During an interview with YouTuber JorRaptor, Richard Knight explained that the development team simply couldn’t import the original game’s code into Black Flag Resynced.

The reason is straightforward: game development technology has evolved dramatically since 2013.

“Quite frankly, it’s a brand new game.”

Knight explained that the original codebase was built using technology that differs significantly from Ubisoft’s current engine and development pipeline, making direct reuse impossible.

Instead, the team studied the original game to understand how its systems functioned before recreating them with modern technology.

The Original Game Was Used as a Blueprint

Although the code itself wasn’t reused, Ubisoft still relied heavily on the original Black Flag throughout development.

According to Knight, the team regularly examined the old game’s data to understand mechanics, gameplay systems, and hidden technical details.

In some cases, certain assets were temporarily used as placeholders during development, but nearly every major gameplay system had to be recreated from scratch.

This approach allowed the developers to preserve everything fans loved about the original while modernizing the underlying technology.

Starting Fresh Created New Opportunities

Rebuilding the game from the ground up wasn’t simply a technical necessity—it also gave Ubisoft the freedom to improve certain aspects of the experience.

Knight explained that starting with a clean foundation allowed the developers to refine gameplay systems, implement modern technology, and make meaningful improvements that wouldn’t have been possible if they were limited by the original game’s architecture.

The result is a remake that remains remarkably faithful to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, while delivering upgraded visuals, improved mechanics, and numerous quality-of-life enhancements for today’s players.

With Black Flag Resynced already receiving strong praise from fans and critics alike, Ubisoft’s decision to rebuild the game rather than simply remaster it appears to have paid off.
