Team17 has officially revealed Worms Galactic Tactics at Gamescom 2026, bringing the beloved franchise back with a much heavier focus on tactical, XCOM-style strategy.
The Worms are officially back, and this time they’re putting even more thought into blowing each other up.
During Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, Team17 finally unveiled Worms Galactic Tactics, confirming the new entry after weeks of leaks surrounding both its name and early gameplay.
While strategy has always been at the heart of Worms, Galactic Tactics takes that concept considerably further, combining the franchise’s familiar destructive chaos with a more deliberate approach to movement, positioning and combat.
Think Worms meets XCOM with a little Mario + Rabbids thrown into the mix, and you’re probably heading in the right direction.

Worms Galactic Tactics Takes the Series Deeper Into Strategy
Traditional Worms games have always required more thinking than their ridiculous weapons and cartoon presentation might initially suggest.
Positioning your team, accounting for the environment and deciding when to unleash a devastating weapon can make the difference between victory and watching one of your worms get launched halfway across the map.
Galactic Tactics appears to build an entire game around that strategic foundation.
Rather than simply navigating the battlefield and taking a shot, players will need to think more carefully about movement and positioning before committing to an attack.
The result looks closer to a dedicated tactical strategy game while retaining the personality and chaos that have defined Worms for decades.
And judging by its Gamescom reveal, the absurdity isn’t going anywhere.

Worms Galactic Tactics Wasn’t Exactly a Secret
The announcement won’t come as a complete surprise to anyone following the franchise closely.
The Worms Galactic Tactics name leaked online earlier in August 2026, following an even earlier leak that seemingly revealed gameplay from the then-unannounced project.
Gamescom Opening Night Live finally gave Team17 the opportunity to show the game properly and confirm exactly what direction the franchise is taking.
It’s certainly an interesting experiment.
Worms already lends itself naturally to turn-based tactical gameplay, so leaning harder into those mechanics could give the long-running series a refreshing new identity without abandoning what made it popular in the first place.
Now we just need to know how many ridiculous weapons we’ll have at our disposal.
What do you think of Worms Galactic Tactics? Is an XCOM-style approach exactly what the franchise needed, or would you rather see another traditional Worms game? Let us know in the comments below.
