4A Games has revealed a new Metro 2039 trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live, offering another impressive look at its dark, detailed post-apocalyptic Moscow ahead of the game’s February 2027 release.
Metro is finally preparing for its long-awaited return.
During Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, 4A Games showcased a brand-new trailer for Metro 2039, expanding on the gameplay footage revealed several weeks ago and giving us a much better look at the world players will explore.
And if there was any concern that the series might lose some of its trademark atmosphere after Metro Exodus, the latest footage should put those worries to rest.
Metro 2039 looks bleak, dangerous and absolutely gorgeous.
Metro 2039 Takes Players Back to Moscow
After Metro Exodus took players across post-apocalyptic Russia, Metro 2039 is returning to Moscow, bringing the franchise back to the location that defined its earliest games.
However, this isn’t simply a return to familiar territory.
4A Games appears to be significantly increasing the scale and detail of its environments, with the latest trailer showcasing ruined locations packed with environmental detail, oppressive lighting and the kind of unsettling atmosphere the Metro series has always handled exceptionally well.
The technology behind the game has also evolved considerably since Metro Exodus launched in 2019. Environments look denser, combat appears heavier and more realistic, and the overall presentation feels like a substantial step forward for the franchise.
Metro 2039 has already surpassed one million wishlists, suggesting anticipation for the series’ return is extremely high.

Metro 2039 Introduces a New Protagonist
One of the biggest changes is who we’ll actually be playing.
For the first time in the mainline series, Artyom will not serve as the protagonist.
Instead, players assume control of a mysterious Spartan known as The Stranger.
The character has been living in exile away from Moscow’s Metro before circumstances force him to return and confront both his own past and the increasingly dangerous situation developing beneath the city.
It’s a major change after three games centered around Artyom, but it also gives 4A Games an opportunity to tell a completely different story within the familiar Metro universe.
Another significant departure is that The Stranger is voiced, meaning Metro 2039’s protagonist will have a much more active presence throughout conversations and story sequences.
Combined with the return to Moscow, it should give the game a noticeably different narrative dynamic while retaining the survival-horror identity of previous entries.
The latest Gamescom trailer only strengthens the impression that 4A Games is aiming for its most ambitious Metro title yet.
Metro 2039 is scheduled to release in February 2027.
