PlayStation Blackout Had ‘No Significant Change At All’, Analyst Says

The week-long PlayStation Blackout protest appears to have had little impact on the platform, with Circana reporting no significant change in player numbers or engagement during the campaign.

The protest ran from August 23 to August 30, encouraging players to stop using PlayStation consoles and services in response to Sony’s decision to end physical disc production for new PlayStation releases beginning in 2028.

PlayStation Blackout Didn’t Move the Numbers

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella was asked whether the company’s tracking data showed any noticeable effects during the blackout.

His answer was straightforward:

“No. There was no significant change at all in player count or engagement in our tracking.”

The campaign had already faced criticism over whether a one-week boycott could generate enough participation to make a measurable difference.

Its timing also overlapped with Gamescom 2026, potentially making it more difficult to separate any protest-related changes from normal fluctuations in player activity.

Organizers Say More Action Could Follow

Despite the lack of a visible impact in Circana’s data, DoesItPlay, which spearheaded the movement, said after the campaign that the minimum participation target for the blackout had been reached.

The group also suggested there could be further opportunities for players to take action in the future.

For now, however, the available tracking data suggests the first PlayStation Blackout did not produce a significant decline in player count or engagement during its August 23–30 run.
