Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Director Fought to Keep Physical Release

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi says he used his position at Square Enix to push for a physical release of the final game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy.

Speaking to Radio Times, Hamaguchi discussed the industry’s increasing move toward digital releases and the growing concern among players about physical games eventually becoming little more than download codes inside boxes.

Hamaguchi said he understands players who follow a “no disc, no purchase” approach and revealed that he argued for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation to receive a physical edition.

Hamaguchi Understands Concerns Over Physical Games

According to Hamaguchi, there is significant pressure within the modern games industry toward disc-less and digital editions.

He explained that he used his position to argue for a physical version of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation as much as possible, while acknowledging that the final decisions surrounding physical distribution are not entirely his to make.

Hamaguchi also said he understands players who disagree with the industry’s direction toward digital distribution, stressing that he did his best to support the physical release.

The discussion comes as the future of physical games continues to face uncertainty across the industry.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is expected to require around 200 GB of storage, making its physical release particularly challenging as Square Enix prepares the final chapter of the remake trilogy.
