Cuphead Is Back: Two New Games Officially Announced at Summer Game Fest

Nearly a decade after its original release, the world of Cuphead is officially expanding once again.

During this year’s Summer Game Fest, developer Studio MDHR surprised fans by announcing not one, but two brand-new Cuphead projects currently in development.

This was probably one of the most unexpected reveals of the entire show.

Cuphead 2 Is Officially Happening

The biggest announcement is simple: a full Cuphead sequel is now in development.

Studio MDHR didn’t reveal many details about the project, but the confirmation alone was enough to send fans into celebration mode.

Considering the original Cuphead became one of the most successful indie games of all time, a sequel has been one of the industry’s worst-kept wishes for years.

Unfortunately, players will need to remain patient a little longer, as the studio stopped short of revealing gameplay footage or a release window.

A Surprise 8-Bit Spin-Off Was Also Revealed

Alongside the sequel announcement, Studio MDHR unveiled a second project called Mighty Cuphead Adventure.

Unlike the hand-drawn style that made Cuphead famous, this new game adopts a retro-inspired 8-bit aesthetic that immediately evokes memories of classic Nintendo platformers.

Only a brief gameplay teaser was shown during the presentation, but it already appears to be taking inspiration from old-school side-scrolling adventures while maintaining the charm and personality of the Cuphead universe.

The developers promised more details will be shared in the future.

A Franchise That Refuses to Slow Down

When Cuphead launched in 2017, few expected it to become such a massive phenomenon.

The game’s gorgeous hand-drawn animation, inspired by 1930s cartoons, instantly made it stand out from everything else on the market.

Of course, players quickly discovered that behind those charming visuals was one of the most challenging games of the generation.

Its brutal boss battles became legendary, turning Cuphead into a favorite among hardcore gamers and streamers alike.

More Than Just a Video Game

Since its release, Cuphead has grown into a much larger franchise.

The series received:

  • A successful Netflix animated adaptation
  • Multiple merchandise lines
  • The critically acclaimed The Delicious Last Course expansion
  • Global recognition as one of gaming’s most unique franchises

The final DLC launched in 2022 and was widely viewed as the perfect send-off.

As it turns out, Studio MDHR wasn’t finished after all.

The Future Looks Bright for Cuphead Fans

While neither project currently has a release date, the fact that Studio MDHR is actively working on both a sequel and a spin-off suggests the franchise is entering its biggest era yet.

The 8-bit Mighty Cuphead Adventure appears designed to give fans something new to enjoy while the team continues work on the next major chapter of the series.

After waiting almost ten years for a sequel announcement, most Cuphead fans will probably be happy to take both.
