Diablo 5 is moving away from Diablo 4’s fixed open-world structure, with Blizzard confirming that both its overworld and dungeons will use procedural generation.
During a BlizzCon 2026 panel dedicated to Diablo 5, senior production director Tiffany Wat explained that Blizzard wants exploration to feel unpredictable again, with previously visited regions changing when players return.

Diablo 5 Returns to Procedural Generation
“In Diablo 5, we’re bringing back the procedural worlds. Both in the dungeons and the overworld.”
Unlike Diablo 4, where players can gradually learn and map Sanctuary’s fixed world, Diablo 5 is designed so that knowledge from a previous visit may not necessarily help the next time.
Wat explained that paths, landmarks and enemy encounters can change when returning to an area.
“If you go back to a region that you’ve been before, all that information that I did yesterday, that path that I found, that landmark that I was moving towards, how to fight those elite monsters, none of that information is going to help me today.”
Blizzard describes the philosophy as one of “constant discovery,” with exploration intended to maintain a sense of uncertainty.
“The only thing beyond the fog of war is more questions.”
Sanctuary Won’t Feel Safe
The procedural design also ties directly into Diablo 5’s darker version of Sanctuary.
Wat says players should never become completely comfortable with their surroundings because the towns are gone and Sanctuary has become an increasingly brutal place to survive.
The change marks a return to one of the defining elements of earlier Diablo games, where procedural generation made repeated journeys through familiar locations less predictable.
Diablo 5 is currently scheduled to launch in Spring 2029.
