Blizzard has officially announced Diablo 5 at BlizzCon 2026, confirming a Spring 2029 release window and revealing a grim premise in which Diablo has already conquered Sanctuary.
Unlike previous games where players fight to prevent catastrophe, Diablo 5 begins after the worst has already happened. The heroes are gone, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won.
Diablo 5 Takes Place After the Fall of Sanctuary
Blizzard revealed the first story details alongside the announcement, framing Diablo 5 around one central question:
“What must you become when the world has already fallen?”
The premise suggests a significantly darker starting point for the next installment. Rather than attempting to stop Diablo from gaining power, players will enter a world already overwhelmed by his forces.
Further details about the game’s development are expected during a dedicated Diablo 5 panel at BlizzCon.
Diablo Has a Huge Few Years Ahead
Diablo 5 wasn’t Blizzard’s only major announcement for the franchise.
Diablo 4 is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15, while the Amazon class is scheduled to join the game during the first half of 2027.
Blizzard has also partnered with Netflix to produce a new animated Diablo series, with further details still to come.
Diablo 4 therefore has several more years of planned support ahead of it before the next mainline installment arrives. Diablo 5 is officially targeting Spring 2029, beginning a new chapter where saving Sanctuary may no longer be an option — because the world has already fallen.
