EA Sports appears to be developing an unannounced AAA free-to-play online game, according to a new job listing from Electronic Arts.
The listing, spotted for a Client Engineer position at EA’s Shanghai studio, specifically mentions work on a “AAA free-to-play online title” alongside ongoing live-service support.
While EA has not officially announced the project, the position is connected to the company’s EA Sports division.
EA Sports Has an Unannounced AAA Free-to-Play Project
According to the job description, the successful candidate will help:
“deliver high-quality features and live-service support for a AAA free-to-play online title.”
Beyond that description, EA does not identify the game, its sport, platforms or whether it belongs to one of the company’s existing franchises.
The Shanghai location naturally raises the possibility of a mobile project. EA’s operations in China include EA Sports FC Mobile Shanghai Studio, and knowledge of mobile game development is mentioned among the desired qualifications.
However, mobile development experience is listed as a preferred rather than mandatory skill, meaning there isn’t currently enough information to conclude that the mystery project is exclusively a mobile game.
EA’s teams in China also contribute to projects across the wider company, including major franchises such as Apex Legends and Battlefield.
Could It Be a New EA Sports Game?
That’s the big question.
EA Sports already operates some of the biggest annual sports franchises in gaming, including EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, NHL and UFC, while free-to-play games have become an increasingly important part of EA’s wider portfolio.
The wording of the listing is particularly interesting because it refers to an unannounced AAA title, rather than simply mentioning ongoing development for an established annual release.
That could point toward a new entry based on an existing EA Sports property, a free-to-play adaptation of one of its franchises, or potentially something entirely different.
For now, however, EA hasn’t provided enough information to determine exactly what the project is.
What the job listing does reveal is that EA Sports has another AAA free-to-play online project in development, with live-service support planned as a fundamental part of the game.
