One of the most surprising announcements at this year’s Summer Game Fest came from legendary game designer Fumito Ueda, the creative mind behind ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.
His next project is called gen ATLAS, and after seeing the debut trailer, it’s already looking like one of the most intriguing games currently in development.
A New Adventure From Fumito Ueda
gen ATLAS is being developed by Gen Design and Project Robot, with publishing duties handled by Epic Games.
The game is described as a single-player open-world action-adventure experience and immediately carries many of the visual and artistic trademarks fans have come to associate with Ueda’s previous work.
The reveal trailer introduces players to a mysterious abandoned world filled with colossal structures, ancient ruins, massive machines, and vast empty landscapes that seem to hide countless secrets.
The atmosphere alone feels like a spiritual successor to some of Ueda’s most beloved creations.
A World Built Around Mystery
According to the official description, players will explore a silent planet littered with the remnants of a forgotten civilization.
“Before you lies a vast, silent world. Colossal structures stretch over endless plains, deserted facilities, and an ever-changing sea. The remnants of some grand design litter the planet’s surface.”
That sense of mystery has always been a defining element of Ueda’s games, and gen ATLAS appears to continue that tradition.
Throughout the trailer, gigantic mechanical beings can be seen wandering across the landscape, instantly drawing comparisons to the towering creatures from Shadow of the Colossus.

More Action Than Previous Ueda Games
While exploration and atmosphere remain central themes, gen ATLAS appears to place a much larger focus on action than the director’s previous projects.
Towards the end of the trailer, players are shown engaging enemies with firearms, chasing targets across large environments, navigating dangerous situations involving rocket launches, and using a jetpack to traverse enormous mechanical structures.
The gameplay footage suggests a significantly faster-paced experience than anything previously created by Gen Design.
At the same time, the enormous machines, environmental storytelling, and lonely atmosphere still feel unmistakably inspired by Ueda’s earlier work.
Coming to PS5, XBOX, and PC
Although no release date was announced during Summer Game Fest, the developers confirmed that gen ATLAS is currently planned for:
- PlayStation 5
- XBOX Series X|S
- PC via Epic Games Store
Given the scale of what was shown, it’s likely that players may have to wait a while before learning exactly when the game will arrive.
One of Summer Game Fest’s Biggest Surprises
Summer Game Fest delivered plenty of major announcements, but few generated as much curiosity as gen ATLAS.
A brand-new world from the creator of some of gaming’s most critically acclaimed artistic adventures was always going to attract attention, but the combination of giant machines, open-world exploration, jetpack traversal, and action-focused gameplay has already sparked considerable excitement.
And if the reveal trailer is any indication, gen ATLAS could become one of the most fascinating games to watch over the next few years.
