Sony has clarified previously reported PlayStation disc production figures, confirming that overall production volume is expected to decline by 10% – not fall to just 10% of its current level.
The clarification comes amid continued discussion surrounding Sony’s decision to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation releases beginning in January 2028.
Earlier reporting based on comments from Sony DADC President Dietmar Tanzer suggested that disc production at a major manufacturing facility could fall by as much as 90% in 2028. Sony DADC now says that interpretation was incorrect.

PlayStation Disc Production Will Drop by 10%, Not to 10%
Sony DADC clarified that the original figure referred to an expected 10% decline in overall product volume, rather than production falling to only 10% of current levels.
“To clarify and avoid any misleading information: in that statement Dietmar anticipated an overall product volume decline by 10 percent, not a decline down to 10 percent.”
That’s a substantial difference and suggests Sony’s disc-manufacturing operations won’t shrink nearly as dramatically as previously reported.
Existing PlayStation Games Can Still Receive New Disc Runs
Sony’s 2028 policy applies to new games released after the cutoff, but that doesn’t mean physical PlayStation discs will completely disappear.
Games released before January 2028 can continue receiving additional physical stock afterward.
Sony DADC confirmed:
“There will be reorders going to the market after January 2028.”
The clarification means existing physical PlayStation releases can continue being manufactured and restocked even after Sony stops producing discs for new games.
However, the broader decision to move future PlayStation releases away from physical media remains unchanged, with Sony’s plans continuing to face significant criticism from players concerned about ownership and game preservation.
