Microsoft has officially announced that Xbox backward compatibility is expanding to PC, allowing players to revisit classic Xbox titles on modern computers and handheld gaming devices.
The initiative marks the beginning of a broader preservation effort aimed at bringing original Xbox games to PC while adding modern graphical enhancements and quality-of-life improvements.
Four Classic Xbox Games Available Today
The new backward compatibility program launches with four original Xbox games, all of which are available starting July 22.
The first wave includes:
- BLiNX: The Time Sweeper
- Conker: Live & Reloaded
- Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
- Fusion Frenzy
Players can purchase each title individually on PC, and all four games are also included with every Xbox Game Pass subscription tier.
According to Microsoft, this is only the first step, with many more classic Xbox titles expected to arrive over time.
Xbox Wants to Preserve Gaming History
Announcing the feature, Jason Ronald, Xbox’s Vice President of Next Generation, explained that preserving players’ game libraries is a major focus for the company.
“Your library is more than just a collection of games. It is your personal history of epic stories and treasured memories from the past.”
Ronald added that Xbox wants players to carry their gaming history forward as technology evolves rather than leaving classic titles behind.
He also confirmed that today’s release represents the beginning of a long-term initiative to bring more original Xbox games to PC in the future.
Modern Features for Classic Games
These aren’t simple ports of older games.
Microsoft has introduced several modern enhancements designed to improve the experience on today’s hardware, including:
- Up to 4x resolution upscaling
- VSync support
- Fullscreen and Windowed display modes
- Enhanced anti-aliasing
- Anisotropic filtering
- Customizable language and audio settings
These upgrades allow classic Xbox games to look and perform significantly better on modern PCs without changing their original gameplay.
More Games Are on the Way
Microsoft confirmed that the backward compatibility library will continue to expand over the coming months.
Future additions are expected to include more original Xbox classics, while select games will also receive Xbox achievements for the first time, giving longtime fans another reason to revisit some of the platform’s most memorable titles.
