S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl was already a financial success before it even launched, according to GSC Game World’s founder Sergiy Grygorovych.
In a recent interview, Grygorovych revealed that Microsoft’s deal to secure the game as a timed Xbox exclusive generated more money than the title’s entire development cost, allowing the project to become profitable before players even got their hands on it.
Xbox Covered More Than the Entire Development Budget
Speaking during an interview with YouTuber OLDBoi, Grygorovych discussed the business decision behind partnering with Microsoft.
While he didn’t reveal the exact value of the agreement, he confirmed that Xbox’s investment exceeded the total cost of developing the game.
“We took more than the cost of Stalker 2. It paid for itself before the first day.”
According to Grygorovych, Microsoft viewed Stalker 2 as a valuable exclusive at a time when competition between Xbox and PlayStation for major releases was particularly strong.
He also noted that Microsoft’s financial position gave the company the flexibility to invest heavily in projects it believed could strengthen the Xbox ecosystem.
A Viral Trailer Helped Secure the Deal
Grygorovych explained that one of the biggest reasons Microsoft pursued Stalker 2 was the incredible response to the game’s reveal trailer.
After seeing the trailer’s online performance and viewership numbers, Xbox reportedly moved very quickly.
“They looked at the trailer views and quickly joined.”
According to the studio founder, the entire agreement came together rapidly, with Microsoft preparing the necessary contracts within approximately a week.
Stalker 2 Went on to Become a Commercial Success
Although Microsoft’s investment ensured the project was profitable before launch, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl also performed exceptionally well after release.
The game launched on November 20, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Within its first five months, it had:
- Sold more than 3 million copies.
- Reached over 6 million players across supported platforms.
Following the expiration of its one-year timed exclusivity agreement, Stalker 2 finally arrived on PlayStation 5 on November 20, 2025, allowing an even larger audience to experience the long-awaited survival shooter.
The comments provide a rare glimpse into the financial side of platform exclusivity, highlighting just how valuable major third-party releases can be in the ongoing competition between Xbox and PlayStation.
