PS6 Launch Window Remains Uncertain Amid Rising Memory Prices

Sony Interactive Entertainment has reportedly still not decided when the next generation of PlayStation hardware will launch, with rising RAM and component prices continuing to create uncertainty around the future of the rumored PlayStation 6.

The comments come from a recent Q&A session following Sony’s latest financial earnings report, where the company also revealed that the PlayStation 5 is approaching 100 million lifetime sales and confirmed a massive $765 million loss related to Bungie.

Sony Still Unsure About PS6 Timing and Price

During the investor session, Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki discussed the growing cost of memory components and how global supply issues continue to impact long-term planning for future hardware.

According to Totoki, Sony has already secured the materials needed for the remainder of the current fiscal year, but concerns begin in fiscal year 2027 due to expected shortages and extremely high memory prices.

“Looking at the current circumstances, the memory price is also expected to be very high in FY2027 because there will still be a shortage of supply,” Totoki explained.

Because of that uncertainty, Sony says it has not yet decided when the next PlayStation console will launch or how much it could cost.

“We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices,” Totoki stated.

Could PS6 Be Delayed Until 2029?

Rumors surrounding the PlayStation 6 have circulated for years, with several reports previously suggesting that Sony may delay the system as far as 2029 due to rising hardware costs and ongoing supply chain concerns.

While Sony has not officially confirmed any launch window, Totoki’s comments suggest those rumors may not be entirely unrealistic.

Interestingly, Sony does not appear overly concerned about extending the current generation’s lifespan. Totoki explained that PlayStation’s active user base continues to grow steadily, giving the company more flexibility when planning the future of the platform.

Sony Considering New Business Models

Perhaps the most interesting part of the discussion was Totoki hinting that Sony may rethink parts of its traditional console business model moving forward.

According to the executive, the company is currently evaluating different strategies and possible changes to its business structure in order to find the “best solution” for both Sony and players.

What exactly that means remains unclear, but it could potentially involve new hardware approaches, subscription strategies, cloud integration, or alternative release models for future PlayStation platforms.

PS5 Generation May Last Longer Than Expected

The current PlayStation 5 generation is already lasting longer than many players originally expected, especially as the gaming industry continues to deal with inflation, rising production costs, and growing demand for AI-related hardware components.

With memory prices continuing to rise globally, Sony appears to be taking a cautious approach before committing to the next generation of console hardware.

For now, the future of the PS6 remains uncertain — but it’s clear that Sony is already carefully planning what comes next for PlayStation.
