After years of rumors, speculation, and endless fan requests, Spyro the Dragon is finally making his long-awaited return.
During the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, Activision and Toys for Bob officially unveiled Spyro the Dragon: A Realm Beyond, marking the beloved purple dragon’s first brand-new console adventure in nearly two decades.
The reveal trailer didn’t give away too much, but it was more than enough to send longtime fans into celebration mode.
Spyro’s First New Adventure Since 2008
While Spyro returned in 2018 through the hugely successful Spyro Reignited Trilogy, that collection was a faithful remake of the original three games rather than an entirely new experience.
A Realm Beyond changes that.
The upcoming title will be Spyro’s first completely original console adventure since The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, which launched back in 2008.
That means fans have been waiting almost 20 years to explore a brand-new Spyro world.
A New Realm Awaits
The announcement trailer offered a brief look at Spyro soaring through colorful environments, mysterious floating islands, magical portals, and several previously unseen locations.
While Activision has yet to reveal specific gameplay details, the footage suggests that Toys for Bob is staying true to the exploration, platforming, and collectible-focused gameplay that made the original trilogy such a classic.
More information about the story, worlds, and characters is expected to be revealed in the coming months.

Toys for Bob Returns
The project is being developed by Toys for Bob, the studio behind both the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time.
That pedigree alone will likely give fans confidence.
The studio successfully modernized Spyro in 2018 while preserving the charm, humor, and colorful fantasy world that made the series so beloved in the first place.
Many players have been hoping Toys for Bob would eventually create a completely new Spyro adventure, and now that wish is finally becoming reality.
From PlayStation Icon to Multi-Platform Release
Spyro was once considered one of PlayStation’s biggest mascots alongside Crash Bandicoot, Lara Croft, and PaRappa the Rapper during the late 1990s.
Over the years, however, the franchise expanded to Nintendo and Xbox platforms, eventually becoming a fully multi-platform property.
A Realm Beyond continues that trend and will launch on all major platforms and PC when it arrives in 2027.
A Huge Win for Platformer Fans
The return of Spyro comes at a time when classic mascot platformers are experiencing something of a revival.
With Crash Bandicoot, Sonic, Astro Bot, and now Spyro all receiving major releases in recent years, fans of the genre have plenty to look forward to.
For many players, however, this announcement may be the most exciting of them all.
After nearly twenty years away, the purple dragon is finally getting the new adventure he deserves.
And judging by the reaction online, fans are more than ready to take flight once again.
