A new report claims that the mysterious project is still actively in development at Kojima Productions with Xbox Game Studios Publishing, even as Microsoft reassesses its gaming investments.
Hideo Kojima’s OD: A New Era in Horror Gaming
According to IGN’s Wesley Yin-Poole, OD has not been impacted by the recent restructuring taking place within Xbox.
Many are excited to see the evolution of Hideo Kojima’s OD and its potential impact on the horror genre.
The report states that the game:
“Remains in the works at Kojima Productions and with Xbox Publishing, even as Microsoft reassesses its video game investments.”
While no additional details regarding the project’s progress or release window were shared, the report offers some reassurance for fans who feared OD could become another casualty of Microsoft’s ongoing cuts.
Xbox Is Re-Evaluating Its Investments
The news arrives shortly after reports confirmed that Xbox has ended its publishing partnership with IO Interactive for the studio’s upcoming fantasy RPG, Project Fantasy.
According to Microsoft, the move does not signal a reduction in overall gaming investment but rather a shift in where that money is being allocated.
An Xbox spokesperson told Bloomberg:
“We’re not reducing our overall investment in games.”
The company added:
“We’re taking a fresh look at where investments are made. We expect to invest about the same in content as we did last year. What’s changing is where we’re investing and the kinds of projects we’re backing.”
Those comments suggest Xbox is becoming increasingly selective about which external projects it funds moving forward.
OD Remains One of Xbox’s Biggest Exclusive Partnerships
Originally revealed during The Game Awards 2023, OD is being developed by legendary creator Hideo Kojima using Microsoft’s cloud technology.
Very little is currently known about the project beyond its unsettling teaser trailer and confirmation that acclaimed filmmaker Jordan Peele is collaborating on the experience.
The game has been described as a new form of entertainment that blends film and interactive horror, making it one of Xbox’s most unique first-party publishing projects.
Xbox Faces Continued Uncertainty
The report comes during one of the most turbulent periods in Xbox’s history.
Recent weeks have included:
Given Hideo Kojima’s past successes, there is much anticipation surrounding Hideo Kojima’s OD.
- Large-scale layoffs across Microsoft Gaming
- Reports of potential studio closures
