Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital Service Could Be Revealed This Month

Microsoft is reportedly preparing to reveal its long-rumored Xbox disc-to-digital service, codenamed Positron, as early as August 2026.

The service is designed to convert eligible physical Xbox games into digital licenses tied to a player’s Microsoft account, potentially providing Xbox owners with a way to preserve their physical libraries as the gaming industry continues moving toward digital distribution.

According to a new report, Microsoft is currently finalizing the remaining details ahead of an expected announcement later this month.

Xbox Positron Reportedly Coming in August

The latest information comes from Windows Central, which reports that Microsoft is putting the finishing touches on Positron before publicly unveiling the service.

While Microsoft has yet to officially announce a date, sources reportedly expect the reveal to happen sometime during August.

With Gamescom 2026 taking place this month and Xbox already confirming a major presence at the event, it could provide Microsoft with an obvious opportunity to introduce the new system.

How Xbox Disc-to-Digital Could Work

Positron is reportedly designed to verify ownership of physical Xbox games and then provide players with a corresponding digital entitlement.

The process is expected to be relatively straightforward.

Players would insert a supported physical disc into their Xbox console, install the game, and launch it while signed into their Microsoft account.

Once ownership has been verified, the account would receive a digital license for the game, allowing the title to become part of the player’s digital Xbox library.

The system could be particularly useful as future Xbox hardware increasingly moves away from traditional disc drives.

Not Every Xbox Game Will Be Supported

Unfortunately, players shouldn’t expect to convert every physical game they own.

According to the report, Positron will support games across several generations, including:

  • Xbox 360
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series X|S

However, compatibility will depend heavily on publisher licensing agreements.

That means certain games could remain unavailable through the program even if they currently work from a physical disc.

Despite those limitations, Microsoft reportedly expects a significant number of Xbox titles to support the service.

Xbox Play Anywhere Could Make Positron Even Better

One particularly interesting benefit could involve Xbox Play Anywhere.

If an eligible Xbox Series X|S physical game supports Play Anywhere, converting the disc into a digital entitlement could reportedly also give the owner access to the PC version through the same Microsoft account.

That would effectively transform certain physical Xbox purchases into cross-platform digital licenses.

Xbox Takes a Different Approach to Physical Games

The reported service arrives as the future of physical media becomes an increasingly controversial topic across the gaming industry.

Sony has already announced plans to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation releases beginning in 2028, prompting significant backlash from players concerned about ownership and game preservation.

Microsoft’s rumored approach appears to tackle the same transition differently.

Rather than simply leaving physical libraries behind, Positron could provide existing Xbox owners with a path to carry at least part of their disc collection into an increasingly digital future.

Official Announcement Could Be Close

Microsoft has not yet officially announced Xbox Positron, meaning the reported August reveal should still be treated as unconfirmed until Xbox makes an announcement.

However, with the service reportedly nearing completion and Microsoft preparing for a major Gamescom presence, players may not have to wait much longer to learn exactly how Xbox’s disc-to-digital system will work.

If Positron delivers on its reported functionality, it could become one of Microsoft’s most important backwards compatibility and game preservation initiatives in years.
