Insomniac Games has confirmed that Wolverine will be the only playable character in Marvel’s Wolverine, putting to rest speculation that characters such as Jean Grey, Mystique, or Sabretooth could receive their own playable sections.
Marvel’s Wolverine is shaping up to be one of the biggest PS5 exclusives of 2026, and Insomniac has made it clear that this adventure belongs entirely to Logan. While other major Marvel characters will play important roles throughout the story, players won’t suddenly be pulled away from Wolverine to control somebody else.
For anyone who remembers the controversial Mary Jane sections from Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, that will probably come as welcome news.
Wolverine Is the Only Playable Character
Speaking with GamesRadar, Marvel’s Wolverine senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed and Insomniac head of technology Mike Fitzgerald addressed speculation surrounding the game’s playable cast.
Recent footage has shown characters such as Jean Grey alongside Logan, leading some players to wonder whether Marvel’s Wolverine could follow the Spider-Man games by occasionally switching protagonists.
Insomniac’s answer couldn’t be much clearer:
“Wolverine is our only playable character.”
That means players will remain in control of Logan throughout the adventure rather than switching between several characters as the story progresses.
It’s an interesting decision considering how heavily Insomniac experimented with multiple playable characters in its Spider-Man games. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 regularly switched between Peter Parker and Miles Morales, while Mary Jane Watson also received several dedicated gameplay sequences.
Other Marvel Characters Can Still Fight Alongside Wolverine
Having only one playable character doesn’t mean Logan will always be fighting alone.
According to the interview, characters including Sabretooth and Mystique can dynamically participate in combat, joining Wolverine during certain encounters and performing small team-up attacks.
However, their involvement doesn’t extend to actually controlling them.
Instead, these characters can contribute to Logan’s fights while remaining AI-controlled, allowing Insomniac to incorporate Wolverine’s allies and enemies directly into gameplay without taking control away from the game’s protagonist.
Jean Grey is also expected to play an important role in the story, but Insomniac’s confirmation means players shouldn’t expect dedicated Jean Grey gameplay sections either.

No Repeat of Spider-Man’s MJ Sections
The decision will likely please players who weren’t fans of the Mary Jane sections featured throughout Insomniac’s Spider-Man games.
Those sequences temporarily moved players away from Spider-Man’s superpowered traversal and combat in favor of slower stealth-focused gameplay.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 attempted to make MJ considerably more capable in combat, but the sections remained divisive among fans, particularly because of how easily she could incapacitate heavily trained enemies.
Marvel’s Wolverine appears to be taking a very different approach.
Rather than interrupting Logan’s gameplay with sections featuring supporting characters, Insomniac is keeping the focus entirely on Wolverine while allowing other characters to contribute naturally during combat and story sequences.
It’s another indication that Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t simply Spider-Man with claws. Between its Mature ESRB rating, brutal dismemberment system, destructible environments, 60 FPS ray-tracing performance target, and Logan being the sole playable character, Insomniac appears committed to giving Wolverine an identity of his own.
