The Simpsons: Hit & Run could finally be making a comeback, with series creator Matt Groening teasing that something related to the beloved 2003 game may be in the works.
The comments came during Disney’s D23 presentation, where Groening was asked about the possibility of Hit & Run returning or finally receiving a sequel. His response provided fans with another reason to get excited, although current Simpsons showrunner Matt Selman quickly stressed that nothing has officially been announced.
More than two decades after its original release, demand for another Simpsons: Hit & Run remains remarkably strong.

During a Simpsons-focused event at D23, Groening was asked directly whether The Simpsons: Hit & Run could return or whether fans might finally see a sequel.
Groening teased that something could be happening behind the scenes, but Selman was quick to temper expectations and make it clear that there is currently no official game announcement.
It’s not the first time Selman has discussed the possibility of bringing Hit & Run back.
The current Simpsons showrunner, who also worked as a writer on the original game, previously admitted that the continued demand from fans hasn’t gone unnoticed.
“My quote about Hit & Run would be, ‘Never say never,’ because we know people love it. We know they want it, so that’s good. If we know people want it, never say never.”
That certainly isn’t confirmation of a remake, remaster, or sequel, but combined with Groening’s latest comments, it keeps the possibility very much alive.
Why Fans Still Want The Simpsons: Hit & Run
Originally released in 2003, The Simpsons: Hit & Run became one of the most beloved licensed games of its era.
The game took obvious inspiration from Grand Theft Auto’s open-world structure but transformed the formula into something unmistakably Simpsons. Players could explore different areas of Springfield, drive dozens of vehicles, complete missions, collect hidden items, and play as several members of the Simpson family.
More than 20 years later, it remains the benchmark against which virtually every Simpsons game is compared.

That’s particularly significant because the franchise has largely disappeared from traditional console gaming. Despite The Simpsons remaining one of the world’s most recognizable entertainment properties, there hasn’t been a major dedicated Simpsons console game in nearly two decades.
Fans have even taken matters into their own hands, creating various Hit & Run fan remake projects and mods designed to modernize the original experience.
A Hit & Run Remaster Might Not Be Simple
Unfortunately, bringing the original game back isn’t necessarily as straightforward as updating the graphics and releasing it on modern consoles.
Selman has previously discussed the complicated licensing and corporate issues surrounding Hit & Run, which could make an official remaster or remake considerably more difficult than fans might expect.
The gaming industry has changed dramatically since 2003, and the rights surrounding the original game’s assets, music, publishing agreements, and other licensed material could all potentially complicate a rerelease.
However, we’re also living through an era where publishers are increasingly bringing classic licensed games back through remasters, remakes, and collections.
That makes the idea of The Simpsons: Hit & Run returning feel considerably more realistic than it did even a few years ago.
Whether Groening’s tease eventually leads to a Hit & Run remaster, full remake, sequel, or an entirely new Simpsons game remains unknown.
For now, Selman’s warning is important: nothing has officially been announced.
But after more than two decades of fans asking for Hit & Run to return, even the suggestion that something might finally be happening is enough to get Springfield buzzing again.
