Wizards of the Coast and Invoke Studios have revealed the first gameplay for Warlock, an original Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2027.
Warlock has returned to the spotlight at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, giving us our first proper look at how its magical combat and exploration actually work.
Developed by Invoke Studios and Wizards of the Coast, Warlock is an original action-adventure set within the Dungeons & Dragons universe. The new gameplay trailer introduces another important character while demonstrating just how heavily magic influences both combat and exploration.
And judging by the footage, simply throwing spells at enemies is only scratching the surface of what Warlock has planned.

Warlock Gameplay Introduces Tasha and Raw Magic
One of the biggest reveals from the new gameplay footage is Tasha, played by Maggie Robertson.
Tasha serves as protagonist Kaatri’s patron and the source of her supernatural powers. During the game, she teaches Kaatri how to detect Raw Magic, a mysterious power hidden throughout Darkon that can be used to expand and transform her magical abilities.
This leads directly into one of Warlock’s most interesting ideas: magic isn’t simply another weapon.
Instead, players can use Kaatri’s abilities to read and manipulate the world around them, creating opportunities during both exploration and combat.
The gameplay footage shows Kaatri using her surroundings, enemy positioning, and even weather conditions to gain an advantage. Different spells can be chained together before Kaatri follows up with her abilities as an experienced weapons master.
That combination gives Warlock a much more systems-driven approach to combat, encouraging players to experiment rather than rely on a single set of attacks.
Magic Can Change How You Explore Warlock’s World
The same philosophy extends beyond combat.
According to Wizards of the Coast, observing the environment and experimenting with Kaatri’s magical abilities can reveal new paths and unexpected solutions throughout Darkon.
That means an obstacle may not necessarily have one predetermined solution. Understanding how different magical systems interact with enemies and the environment could open alternative ways forward.
It’s an interesting direction for a Dungeons & Dragons game, especially given how much freedom and experimentation are traditionally associated with the tabletop RPG.
Warlock appears to be translating some of that philosophy into a real-time action-adventure rather than trying to recreate traditional tabletop mechanics directly.
The latest reveal still leaves plenty of questions unanswered, but it gives us a much clearer idea of what Invoke is building and how Kaatri’s Warlock powers will define the experience.
Warlock is currently scheduled to launch in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
