Physical copies accounted for 51% of Marvel’s Wolverine’s PS5 sales in Europe, highlighting continued demand for disc-based games despite Sony’s reported plans to phase out physical releases.
According to GSD sales data shared by The Game Business, physical editions represented 51% of Marvel’s Wolverine sales in Europe, compared to 35% across the broader markets covered by the report.
The figures suggest that European PlayStation players remain particularly interested in owning physical copies of major releases.

Marvel’s Wolverine Reportedly Sold 2.16 Million Copies
While Sony has yet to release official sales figures, Ampere Analysis estimates that Marvel’s Wolverine has sold 2.16 million copies across physical and digital formats.
The game also reportedly achieved PlayStation’s biggest physical launch of 2026 in the UK, although Resident Evil Requiem and 007 First Light recorded stronger boxed launches overall.
Other major releases have also demonstrated demand for physical editions:
- Silent Hill: Townfall: 45% physical sales.
- The Blood of Dawnwalker: 36% physical sales.
- Onimusha: Way of the Sword: 30% physical sales.
These figures highlight how physical games continue to attract buyers, particularly among collectors.
Physical Games Remain Popular Despite Sony’s Plans
The report comes amid claims that Sony intends to stop producing physical PlayStation games beginning in January 2028.
However, the strong physical sales performance of Marvel’s Wolverine suggests that many European players are not ready to abandon discs.
Industry analyst Joost van Dreunen also emphasized the importance of collecting, suggesting that physical ownership remains a meaningful part of the gaming market.
For now, the figures are based on third-party market data rather than Sony’s official sales announcements, but they provide a clear indication that physical PlayStation games still have a significant audience in Europe.
