BioShock movie director Francis Lawrence says the script for Netflix’s long-awaited adaptation is nearly ready, although production has yet to begin.

Netflix first announced its live-action BioShock adaptation in 2022, but updates on the project have remained limited.

Now, director Francis Lawrence has shared encouraging news about the film’s progress during an interview with GamesRadar+.

BioShock Director Says the Script Is Nearly Finished

Speaking during a press tour for Sunrise on the Reaping, Lawrence confirmed that work on the screenplay is progressing well.

“We’re still working on a script, and I think we’re pretty close, and I’m feeling really good about it,” Lawrence explained.

The director also emphasized his enthusiasm for the project, revealing that he has been eager to bring BioShock to the screen for years.

Despite the progress, Netflix has not announced a filming schedule, cast or release date.

Previously, producer Roy Lee expressed hopes that the movie could coincide with the release of an upcoming BioShock game, although no official plans have been confirmed.

What’s Happening With the Next BioShock Game?

The BioShock franchise has also experienced difficulties on the gaming side.

In August 2025, Rod Fergusson joined 2K to oversee the franchise, following reports that the next BioShock game had failed an internal review.

Around the same period, reports suggested that a planned remake of the original BioShock had been shelved and that the development team had undergone significant layoffs.

While the next game’s future remains uncertain, Lawrence’s latest comments suggest that Netflix’s BioShock adaptation continues to move forward.

For now, fans will have to wait for an official production announcement.
