It’s another difficult day for Bungie.
Following reports of widespread layoffs across the studio, it has now emerged that Justin Truman, Bungie’s studio head, is stepping down from his leadership role after just over a year in the position.
The leadership change comes at one of the most turbulent moments in Bungie’s history, with the studio undergoing major restructuring after the conclusion of Destiny 2 and the disappointing commercial performance of Marathon.
Justin Truman Reportedly Leaving Bungie
The news was first reported by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, who stated that “people familiar with the situation” confirmed Truman’s departure.
Although Bungie has yet to publicly comment on the leadership change, the timing suggests it is part of the broader restructuring currently taking place within the studio.
Truman became Bungie’s studio head in 2025, overseeing development across multiple projects during a period of significant transition following Sony’s acquisition of the company.
His departure now adds another layer of uncertainty as Bungie attempts to redefine its future.
Bungie Announces Layoffs Following Destiny 2’s End
Earlier today, Bungie officially confirmed a company-wide reduction in force, acknowledging that the studio could no longer operate at its previous size.
In a statement shared on social media, Bungie admitted that Destiny 2 had fallen short of expectations over recent years and explained that difficult decisions had become unavoidable.
“Following our final content update to Destiny 2, and with our future projects still in early incubation, we unfortunately could not continue operating at our previous size.”
The studio also recognized the impact the layoffs will have on affected employees while promising to share more details about Bungie’s future in the months ahead.
At the time of writing, Bungie has not confirmed exactly how many employees have been laid off.
Reports Suggest Both Destiny and Marathon Teams Were Affected
According to an internal memo reportedly sent by PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst, the layoffs impact the majority of Bungie’s Destiny team as well as portions of the Marathon development staff.
Rumors circulating before Bungie’s announcement suggested that as much as 50% of the studio could be affected, although neither Bungie nor Sony has confirmed those figures.
Following the announcement, social media quickly filled with posts from former employees confirming their departures and sharing messages about their time at the studio.
Marathon’s Difficult Launch Adds Pressure
Much of Bungie’s current situation stems from the performance of Marathon, the studio’s first brand-new franchise in over a decade.
Despite years of anticipation, Marathon struggled to gain momentum after launch and failed to establish itself among the increasingly crowded extraction shooter market.
Player numbers declined rapidly during its first few months, prompting Bungie to announce plans for new content and additional PvE-focused modes designed to attract a broader audience.
However, even those updates received mixed reactions from the community, with some longtime fans questioning whether they aligned with Marathon’s original vision.
What’s Next for Bungie?
The future of Bungie now appears more uncertain than at any point in the studio’s modern history.
With Destiny 2 officially reaching the end of its content roadmap and Marathon still searching for long-term stability, Bungie’s remaining projects reportedly remain in early incubation.
Those unannounced games could eventually define the studio’s next chapter, but for now, Bungie faces the enormous challenge of rebuilding after significant layoffs, leadership changes, and a difficult period of commercial performance.
As more information emerges regarding the restructuring, one thing is clear: one of the industry’s most influential developers is entering a pivotal new era.
