After spending years bringing one of gaming’s most beloved stories back to life, Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi is already thinking about what comes next.
With Final Fantasy 7: Revelation set to conclude the remake trilogy in Spring 2027, Hamaguchi recently opened up about his future ambitions and the types of projects he hopes to tackle once Cloud, Sephiroth, and the rest of the iconic cast reach the end of their reimagined journey.
The End Of One Journey, The Beginning Of Another
Originally released in 1997, Final Fantasy 7 remains one of the most influential JRPGs ever created. Square Enix’s modern remake project transformed the classic adventure into a trilogy consisting of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and the upcoming Final Fantasy 7: Revelation.
While the development team is currently focused on delivering a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy, Hamaguchi admits he’s already looking ahead to his next challenge.
Speaking with Game Informer, the veteran director explained that although Revelation remains his top priority, he already knows one thing about his future project: it will almost certainly be another RPG.
A New RPG Challenge Appeals To Him
Hamaguchi revealed that he would love to continue working on large-scale RPG experiences, whether they fall under the Final Fantasy banner or another Square Enix franchise entirely.
Interestingly, the director suggested that stepping away from Final Fantasy could actually be even more exciting because it would allow him to explore something completely new.
“In terms of what I personally want to do, obviously, I think my next creative work is also going to be a JRPG.”
He continued by praising Square Enix’s ability to create massive RPG worlds capable of reaching players across the globe, while emphasizing his desire to take on a fresh challenge after Revelation launches.
While many fans have already begun speculating about future Final Fantasy remakes—including the often-requested Final Fantasy 6—Hamaguchi stopped short of revealing any concrete plans.
Square Enix Has Plenty Of Possibilities
Whether Hamaguchi remains within the Final Fantasy universe or branches out into another Square Enix property, there is certainly no shortage of options.
The publisher continues to manage some of the industry’s most recognizable RPG franchises, including Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, NieR, Octopath Traveler, and several newer original properties.
His comments also arrive at an interesting time for the company. During the recent Nintendo Direct, Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Resonance, the franchise’s first HD-2D entry, further demonstrating the publisher’s willingness to experiment with different styles and approaches.
Final Fantasy 7: Revelation Launches In 2027
Before fans start looking too far ahead, there is still one major chapter left to experience.
Final Fantasy 7: Revelation is currently scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 and will bring the ambitious remake trilogy to its conclusion. Expectations are understandably high following the success of both Remake and Rebirth, with many players eager to see how Square Enix reimagines the final chapters of one of gaming’s greatest stories.
Once that journey is complete, however, it sounds like Naoki Hamaguchi will be ready to begin a brand-new RPG adventure—whether that means another Final Fantasy or something entirely unexpected.
