One of the biggest questions following the reveal of God of War: Laufey was simple:
How long will players have to wait?
Thankfully, according to one of gaming’s most reliable insiders, the answer appears to be: not very long.
God of War: Laufey Isn’t Years Away
Following the game’s surprise reveal during June’s PlayStation State of Play, fans immediately noticed that Sony and Santa Monica Studio avoided giving any kind of release window.
Normally, that’s often a sign that a game is still several years away.
However, Bloomberg journalist and industry insider Jason Schreier has now suggested that’s not the case at all.
In a recent post on BlueSky, Schreier told fans not to overthink the absence of a release date, stating that unlike many major game announcements:
“This one isn’t years away.”
That comment alone immediately sparked speculation that God of War: Laufey could potentially arrive as early as 2027.
Schreier Says It’s Definitely Not Releasing in 2028
The biggest clue came shortly afterward.
When asked directly by a fan whether God of War: Laufey was targeting a 2028 release, Schreier responded with a very straightforward answer:
“Definitely not.”
While that still doesn’t give players an exact launch window, it does significantly narrow down the possibilities.
Assuming there are no major delays, the most likely release period now appears to be sometime during 2027.
And honestly?
Considering how much gameplay Santa Monica already showed, that timeline makes a lot of sense.
Santa Monica Revealed Much More Than a Typical Teaser
Unlike many first announcements that consist of nothing more than logos or short cinematic trailers, God of War: Laufey arrived with an extensive gameplay showcase.
Players were shown more than twenty minutes of footage, including what appeared to be the opening portion of the game.
That level of confidence usually indicates development is already well advanced.
The footage showcased:
- Exploration
- Combat
- Cinematics
- Story sequences
- New environments
- Faye’s unique abilities
Which is far more than most newly announced AAA projects typically reveal.
Faye Takes Center Stage
God of War: Laufey follows Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, immediately after her funeral.
The story sees her awakening inside the gods’ afterlife, a mysterious realm known as Everywhen.
Throughout her journey, Faye encounters gods, creatures, and mythological figures from multiple pantheons while searching for a path back from the afterlife.
The concept gives Santa Monica an opportunity to explore entirely new mythologies while expanding one of the franchise’s most important characters.
Faye Is Every Bit as Powerful as Fans Expected
Long before players ever met Faye directly, the God of War games established her as one of the most formidable warriors in the Nine Realms.
According to Santa Monica, even Thor viewed her as an equal.
That reputation is reflected heavily in the gameplay.
The developers describe Faye’s combat style as:
- Powerful
- Aggressive
- Fluid
- Highly lethal
She can absorb punishment on a level comparable to Kratos while maintaining significantly faster movement and attack chains.
And honestly?
The gameplay reveal made it very clear that Santa Monica isn’t treating this like a smaller side project.
A 2027 Launch Is Looking Increasingly Likely
While Sony still hasn’t officially announced a release window, Schreier’s comments strongly suggest players won’t be waiting until the end of the decade.
Between the extensive gameplay footage, Santa Monica’s confidence in the reveal, and Schreier’s direct dismissal of a 2028 launch, all signs currently point toward God of War: Laufey arriving sometime in 2027.
And if that’s true, PlayStation fans may not have to wait nearly as long as they originally feared to return to the world of God of War.
