Santa Monica Confirms Kratos Isn’t Going Anywhere After God of War: Laufey Reveal

The reveal of God of War: Laufey immediately sparked one big question across the PlayStation community:

What happens to Kratos?

Thankfully, according to Santa Monica Studio, fans have absolutely nothing to worry about.

While the newly announced spin-off puts the spotlight on Faye, Kratos’ legendary wife, the developers have now confirmed that the God of War himself remains a core part of the franchise’s future.

Kratos Is Still Central to God of War’s Future

Following the reveal of God of War: Laufey during June’s PlayStation State of Play, Santa Monica Studio boss Cory Barlog addressed concerns that the series could be moving away from Kratos permanently.

Speaking in a post-show interview, Barlog made it very clear that the studio simply wants to explore other characters within the universe while continuing Kratos’ story alongside them.

“There’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history.”

According to Barlog, Faye’s adventure is part of a much larger narrative tapestry that Santa Monica wants to build around the God of War universe.

And honestly?

That will probably be enough to reassure a lot of longtime fans.

God of War: Laufey Explores the Afterlife of the Gods

Rather than focusing on Kratos directly, the new spin-off follows Faye after her death, taking players into a mysterious afterlife populated by gods and mythological figures from multiple cultures.

The reveal trailer already showcased appearances from several powerful deities, including:

  • Sekhmet, the Egyptian Goddess of War
  • Begyse, a Buddhist War Deity

This suggests Santa Monica is finally beginning to explore pantheons beyond Norse mythology in a much bigger way.

And honestly?

The afterlife setting opens the door to almost limitless storytelling possibilities.

The reassurance didn’t stop with Cory Barlog’s comments.

Following the reveal, Santa Monica Studio’s official social media account doubled down by teasing that there are still:

“Many more stories”

to tell involving Kratos.

While no future projects were announced, the message strongly suggests that Sony already has long-term plans for the franchise beyond Laufey.

Considering Kratos remains one of PlayStation’s most recognizable characters, that probably isn’t surprising.

Fans Are Divided, But Mostly Excited

As expected, the announcement generated plenty of discussion online.

Some players were initially disappointed that the next God of War game isn’t centered around Kratos himself.

Others were immediately intrigued by the idea of finally learning more about Faye, a character who has shaped the entire Norse saga despite rarely appearing directly.

The conversation became so widespread that even major brands joined in, with Domino’s Pizza jokingly commenting on the reveal across social media.

Still, the overwhelming reaction appears to be excitement rather than concern.

A Bigger God of War Universe Is Taking Shape

For years, fans have speculated about where God of War could go after Ragnarok concluded the Norse storyline.

God of War: Laufey appears to answer that question by expanding the universe rather than simply moving Kratos into another mythology immediately.

The afterlife setting allows Santa Monica to introduce entirely new gods, cultures, and conflicts while still keeping the franchise connected to its existing lore.

And with Kratos officially confirmed to return in future games, it seems Sony is building something much larger than a simple spin-off.

The God of War saga isn’t ending.

If anything, it looks like it’s just getting started again.
