Marvel’s Wolverine Reveals Abilities, Suits, Upgrades and More Ahead of Launch

Insomniac Games has revealed a huge selection of Marvel’s Wolverine gameplay features, detailing Logan’s Rage system, upgradeable Techniques, DNA-based Adaptations, unlockable suits, collectibles and accessibility options ahead of the PS5 exclusive’s September 15 launch.

We’re now just over two weeks away from Marvel’s Wolverine, and Insomniac is finally pulling back the curtain on just how much players will be able to customize Logan.

A new Game Features trailer released on August 28 provides another deep dive into the upcoming PS5 exclusive, showing how Wolverine develops throughout the adventure and revealing several activities waiting beyond the main story.

Unsurprisingly, combat remains at the center of everything – but there’s considerably more going on beneath those adamantium claws.

Marvel's Wolverine

Wolverine’s Adaptations Let You Customize Logan

One of the most interesting progression systems is called Adaptations.

These upgrades are represented through a DNA-inspired skill tree and allow players to improve different aspects of Logan’s mutant abilities and combat effectiveness.

Players can build Wolverine to absorb more gunfire, improve the effectiveness of Rage, increase parry windows and even terrify enemies during combat.

Insomniac says there are dozens of Adaptations available, giving players plenty of opportunities to tailor Logan around their preferred playstyle.

That should work alongside Wolverine’s previously revealed Rage system, which plays a major role in combat and becomes increasingly powerful as Logan gets pushed further during a fight.

Together, Rage and Adaptations appear to form the foundation of Wolverine’s character progression.

Marvel’s Wolverine Will Let Players Turn Off Gore Completely

Techniques Expand Wolverine’s Combat Moveset

Alongside Adaptations are Techniques, essentially Wolverine’s upgradeable combat moves.

The system appears somewhat comparable to the progression found in Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man games, where players gradually unlock additional attacks and abilities as they progress.

Of course, Wolverine fights very differently from Peter Parker or Miles Morales.

Logan’s claws, strength, healing abilities and aggressive fighting style make close-range combat considerably more brutal, with Techniques giving players additional options for dealing with enemies as encounters become increasingly difficult.

The combination of Techniques, Adaptations and Rage should allow players to continuously expand Wolverine’s capabilities throughout the campaign rather than relying on the same handful of attacks from beginning to end.

Marvel’s Wolverine Has Suits From Across Logan’s History

Insomniac is also following another tradition established by its Spider-Man games: lots of costumes.

Marvel’s Wolverine will feature numerous suits inspired by different interpretations of Logan from across his history.

Players will be able to craft outfits drawing inspiration from comic books, movies, animation and more, giving longtime Wolverine fans plenty of references to discover.

Some of the materials required to create these suits can be found while exploring the world, providing another reason to venture away from the main objective.

Given Wolverine’s enormous history across comics and other media, there’s certainly no shortage of potential costumes for Insomniac to work with.

Nightmare Doors and Collectibles Reward Exploration

Marvel’s Wolverine won’t simply move players from one story encounter to another.

While travelling between locations and confronting villains including Omega Red and Deathstrike, Logan can use his enhanced mutant senses to uncover optional activities and secrets.

One of those activities involves Nightmare Doors, which lead to various combat and traversal challenges.

Players can also use Logan’s senses to locate collectible whisky bottles, which reveal pieces of his forgotten memories.

Material crates are scattered throughout the world as well, providing resources that can be used to craft additional suits.

These activities should give players plenty to investigate between major story missions while also providing more insight into Logan’s past.

Insomniac Is Building on Its Spider-Man Formula

There are obvious similarities between some of Wolverine’s progression systems and those found throughout Insomniac’s Spider-Man series.

Upgradeable Techniques, multiple skill paths, optional challenges, collectibles and a huge selection of suits will all feel immediately familiar to players who spent time swinging around New York.

But Wolverine’s abilities give Insomniac an opportunity to build a significantly different combat experience around that foundation.

His regenerative powers, enhanced senses, Rage mechanic and brutal close-range fighting style should separate Logan from the studio’s web-slinging heroes despite some similarities in progression.

With the release now only weeks away, the latest trailer offers our clearest picture yet of how much players will be able to customize and develop Wolverine throughout the game.

Marvel’s Wolverine launches exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.
