One of the biggest talking points surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine since its reveal has been its noticeably darker and more brutal tone compared to Insomniac’s Spider-Man games.
From severed limbs to savage claw attacks and blood-soaked finishers, the latest gameplay showcase made it clear that Logan’s adventure isn’t pulling any punches.
However, for players who aren’t fans of excessive violence, Insomniac has confirmed some good news.
Gore Can Be Disabled in the Settings
Speaking with IGN following Marvel’s Wolverine gameplay reveal at PlayStation State of Play, game director Mike Daly confirmed that players will be able to completely disable gore through the game’s accessibility options.
According to Daly, violence was always going to be a fundamental part of Wolverine’s identity.
“When you look at the aspects of the character and all the stories he’s been through in his history, it was clear that violence was a key part of that.”
Still, the team understood that not every player wants to experience the game’s most graphic moments.
That’s why Insomniac built a dedicated option allowing players to reduce or remove many of the game’s violent visual effects.
A More Family-Friendly Wolverine Experience
Daly explained that the system goes beyond simply removing blood splatters.
The feature selectively adjusts multiple elements throughout the game, including:
- Blood effects
- Dismemberment
- Graphic injuries
- Certain finishing animations
- Other violent visual details
According to Insomniac, the goal was to make the experience more accessible without fundamentally changing the gameplay itself.
“It’s clearly integrated into the game in a lot of different ways, and so it’s a nuanced feature that is very selective about what we show, what we censor.”
And honestly?
Considering how iconic Wolverine’s claws are, that probably wasn’t an easy balance to achieve.
Wolverine Is Significantly More Mature Than Spider-Man
The decision isn’t surprising when looking at the game’s age ratings.
Marvel’s Wolverine has received:
- ESRB M (Mature)
- PEGI 18
By comparison, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 carried:
- ESRB T (Teen)
- PEGI 16
This officially makes Wolverine one of the most mature projects Insomniac Games has ever developed.
And based on the gameplay shown so far, it’s easy to see why.
Violence Is Central to Logan’s Character
Unlike Spider-Man, whose stories often focus on restraint and heroism, Wolverine has always been one of Marvel’s most violent and aggressive heroes.
His healing factor, adamantium claws, and brutal fighting style naturally lend themselves to a more mature presentation.
The recent gameplay reveal showcased:
- Brutal close-quarters combat
- Graphic takedowns
- Environmental executions
- Savage claw attacks
All of which appear to play a major role in combat design.
Giving Players More Choice
Ultimately, Insomniac’s approach feels like a smart compromise.
Players who want the full uncensored Wolverine experience can enjoy the game exactly as intended, while those who prefer a less graphic presentation have the freedom to adjust the experience to their comfort level.
Accessibility options like this are becoming increasingly common in modern games, giving players more control over how they experience a story without forcing a single approach on everyone.
Marvel’s Wolverine launches exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.
